Carrying handgun while hunting! I do but suggestions where.

I carry a pistol while hunting. But any suggestions on where? If I carry on my strong side I Constantly hit it with a slung rifle. I have put it in a pack before but it would take some time to get out in an emergency, shot Mountain Lion last year. Looked for a cross draw holster but can not find one that seems would work well except 1 company which I may try. Other thought was to carry rifle across my chest. Any suggestions that work for you all?
 
Invest in a nice chest rig and lots of problems solved!

Hill People Gear, Cole-Tac, Eberlestock and Alaskan Guide are all quality, American made so look at them all.

Chest rigs has all your necessary gear easily reachable regardless of what clothing your wearing.
 
I wear mine in a tactical style leg/thigh holster on my bike, easily accessed and doesn't get in the way of my hunting gear.
 
No need for big handguns where I hunt so carry Mod. 60 Smith in pancake holster under jacket or T shirt. Most of the time I carry rifle on left shoulder, muzzle down, but clothing protects rifle when I do switch to right, and handgun is readily available to dispatch rattlers, or whatever if needed.

Most of the time I have my 9mm in an ankle holster. Does not get bumped by gear, or covered by clothing. Very easy to reach while sitting, only takes a second if standing.

You must hunt in some pretty sterile conditions.

Wouldn't work where I hunt, either. Would expose the pistol to too much sand, grit, weed seed, etc.

I do not hunt where I need a handgun for backup, so a small J frame Smith in 22 rim fire is all I need for rattlers and coup de grace, worn on the hip, go all day and never notice it
 
As to th ankle holster, NE Ohio is not sterile at all. snow, ice, weeds, wet leaves etc. This particular 9mm is pretty tough, inexpensive, I'm not too worried about getting it banged up a bit. Quick & easy to clean, has never gotten fouled to point won't function. No sand around here, that could certainly be an issue.

Nice. My Alaskan Guide carries my Glock 20 10mm. It is a good rig.
