Carrying Your Rifle upside Down???

How many of you carry your rifles upside down on your sling?? It was suggested to me to do that on my other post. Your barrel would hang pretty low it seems. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Would hate to drag it, or stick it in the mud!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

They say when it's carried barrel down, it's easier to pull the gun up to take a shot.

Honestly, my lighter guns, if I plan on hunting to and from my spot, I take off the sling and carry it. I rarely use a sling anymore and when I do, it's for a long hike or a heavy gun.

I carry my AR unside down, its just more comfortable that way.

Same here. Been doing it like that for a long time.

I once tried to carry my gun upside down. Decided I was really too short to do it. Thankfully I managed to get the barrel cleaned out before I had to get ready for a shot. Wouldn't have been a pretty sight.

I carry my Encore upside down, that trigger guard spur hurts jamming in my back. I'm a left hand rifle shooter so I carry it on my right shoulder and I hold the fore end with my right hand, I can be ready to shoot it in 1 second.

Been carring my rifle that way since they (U.S. Air Force) gave me an M-16 and told me to hump my happy a$$ on my first Bivouac. If you think about it, this sure beats putting a prophylactic over the barrel to keep the rain out.

Barrel down for this kid.

I use a single point sling for my AR. Pretty much the only way it hangs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i normally don't use a sling, but when i was deployed, i carried my weapon on a mamba tactical sling (i also had a grenade launcher attached, so it could get kind of heavy). but with that sling, you can carry it in front or in back, and , when front slung, you can be ready for a shot as if there were no sling there at all.

but i guess the only reason i used it was to keep the weapon secured to my body. never really used slings apart from on my m16.

I've carried most mine that way. In the Eastern Whitetail woods overhead branches will snag that vertical barrel and when ducking a limb the guy in front of you gets a nice view of your muzzle. Barrel down won't snag anything above your shoulder even if you duck, and the only thing in danger in case of discharge is your own foot or the ground, not your buddy's face. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So do you mount your sling in the opposite direction? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

you simply hang your barrel down instead of up... and in the case of fancy leather slings where they have actual discernable "sides," then yes, reverse the sling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Barrel down, as opposed to up.

Tried both, I like the idea of up because with most rifles the muzzle is beyond any portion of my body and more difficult to get in front of.Don't care for the muzzle being next to my legs, or pointed near my feet. Also like the barrel up to be clear of getting any obstructions..I have slipped and went down where the barrel would have been fouled.Probably depends some on what your are carrying and what application you are in.

Up or down if you're worried about rain/dirt down the barrel just carry a roll of scotch tape . Put a small strip over the muzzle . Rain and dirt will stay out and when you fire the tape will not be a factor . This even works with a flash suppressor . Just run it around the end .

I carry barrel down on the off shoulder. It is much faster to get in position to fire.

Another old Air Force cop here. I carried the M-16 muzzle down on the weak side. To get it off, grab the forearm with your weak hand and bring it forward. It'll pretty much rotate itself into position and your shooting hand is free to jack a round work the trigger. Fast!

For deer hunting I carry my Mossberg 500 the same way. If I ever think there's a chance I might slip or something it comes off my shoulder and the muzzle goes up. I've never fouled a barrel yet.

My rifle I mainly carry muzzle up for comfort. Between the scope and heavy barrel it won't ride well muzzle down.

Then again, if I ever get the feeling, it's off the shoulder at the low ready. Aint been caught flat footed with the gun on the shoulder either.

So I guess the answer is that old sixties saying, "if it feels good, do it". Just keep gun safety paramount.

Muzzle down lightweight and heavyweight for me. I actually carry mine with a loose sling and muzzle down, but toward the back. That way, with enough slack, you can rotate straight forward and still have the buttstock on your shoulder. At work, a tactical sling against my chest.

I mainly carry my NEF slung barrel down. The short, barrel heavy NEF is hard to carry barrel up. The heavy barrel just doesn't want to carry comfortable that way.

Now that I have an AR, I find that it too is more comfortable to carry barrel down.

If you aren't careful, you can jab the barrel in the dirt if you try to sit down before unshouldering it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

For one of my lighter calibers, like my Marlin .17HMR Heavy BBl, You don't have much choice, as you walk with it upright, the weight of the Bbl. will start to try to flip around on you so I carry it barrel down. Thats probably the only one I carry like that.

I carry my rifle barrel up. I am able to grab the rifle by the grip area and spin it right up to my shoulder while catching the forearm with my left hand in less than a second or so - I am then ready to fire. if I want to shoulder it again then I just spin it right back in place. My Arm never comes out of the sling this way.
