Carved Ivory pipe?

I'm not a smoker myself but this got passed down to me (years ago) It came from my grandpa. I guess I've had it wrapped up in tissue paper for 20+ years and I don't know how long mom had it. It's carved ivory (guess you already know that) does anyone know anything about these things? (age, value) of course I wouldn't sell it, just curious.

Absolutely no doubt that it's ivory. I has yellowed quite a bit, and is stained from use. (you won't dent it with your finger nail for sure.)

I would certainly contact an established pipe collector to try and ascertain some of the potential history on it, aside from the fact that it belonged to your grandfather...Until you do, you will never really know what you have..

Several years ago, I picked up an old Hawken style muzzle loading rifle with the makers name stamped in the barrel... When I spent some time looking into the history, I found his whole 'pedigree' from when he came from Scotland in 1836 until he died in 1865, as well as the address for the three shops he had during that time...While the rifle itself is not a true "Hawken", it now has it's own personality...

Hey t/c223, yes the mouth piece is missing. It looks like it would slip right over the end nipple there. I've tried to join a "pipe" forum... they won't let me post there??? Heck I'll try to find another one. I'll let ya'll know something (if I ever find out)

Hey Marvin! I couldn't figure out how to ask the folks at the "Maker site"... that's the forum that I did join though... I played around and figured out how to submit a post though... then moderators have to view it and submit the post....? WOW that would get old wouldn't it???

I am not on the forum, I just go there ever so often to read the posts. One of the guys here in town told me about it, he used to be on it. I think the "pre approval" only lasts for awhile and then they turn you loose. It has some pretty good information that I use for other projects. The craftsmanship is out of this world, soem are real artists.

The other site Pipe makers has quit doing repairs he send everyone to this site http://www.starfirepipeworks.com/

One of those places, Pipe makers or Starfire Pipeworks should be able to tell you something about your pipe.

... the guy took out where I asked if anyone knew what it'd be worth... heck I told 'em I'd given it away to my daughter... click here I figured if I could tell her what it was worth on down the road she won't get taken.

Not a very sociable slob. Did you look at the Pipe magazine forum? Maybe they have some "experts". My last guess would be to check with some of the pipe repair places on the net.

Well I guess I'm big enough to eat a little crow here... I talked to the repair fella you posted about there Marvin. He said it was more than likely a Meerschaum pipe like "Black Wolf" said... LOL Sorry about that!...(man I hate the taste of crow)... at my age I am getting a little more used to it though! As far as value he said the Meerschaum pipes usually go for $200-$400 but the nude would push it towards the high end. He said he would replace the mouth piece for $40! I thought that was pretty reasonable and plan to send it to him. He also told me not to clean it as that would ruin the value.

As far as that pipe forum... I won't tell ya'll what I think of a forum where you make a post... the admin. checks what you wrote, then edits it to what he wants you to have said, then publishs it with your name...??? I sent them a comment or 2.
