Case Forming 6x45

You guys that are forming your cases for this round, is there a certain die that works best for it or are any of the standard FLS dies from like redding, rcbs, forster, doing it equally? Saw one post that said the RCBS case forming die worked good but regular dies did the same thing.

Just a 223 case through a regular 6x45 die. I have the extended expander in my RCBS dies, it's just a little bit easier. But I now have some redding dies to try.

Another redding user here. I have the 6mm/223 full length die set. I did have to get a different seating stem due to the 75gr and under bulets that I wanted to shoot would not seat deep enough. I run them through like Venatic said. Load and shoot and do it again. A buddy has the hornady dies and it is basically the samething.

Yup like the rest I use redding FL dies, run the .223 in & out comes a 6x45, so simple even Fred Flintstone can do it.

Another alternative is to get am expander mandrel form Sinclair etc. and just size up the 223 necks. Lube the insides when you do it and you will be GTG. Of course you will need the 6X45 dies anyway or a 223 set with the right bushing to load them later.

I run 5.56 cases thru std rcbs 6x45 dies after lubing the necks with graphite. Works like a charm. From reading the other posts it sounds like it's pretty hard to screw it up.

I started with the Hornady dies about 25 years ago. They work well. Since them I have gone to the mandrel neck up for case forming and then Redding bushing dies from there on out so I can control neck tension a bit more precisely.

This may work for some folks but not in my chamber. The 6x45 has a little shorter shoulders because of the larger diameter neck (you loose that LITTLE bit that extends to 22 cal v/s 24 cal). I neck sized only some 223 brass & it would not lock up. You could CRAM it in the chamber (crush fit) but its MUCH easier to just FL size 223 cases. I use Hornaday's one shot spray lube & it works great. Spray the cases, run through die, wipe with towel, load. Easy as pie (I too using Redding dies).

Starting with NEW cases I have never had a problem with the four 6X45's I shoot. If I want to run fired cases and expand them I have already sized them back to SAAMI 0.000 on the shoulders.

I've toyed with the idea as I have a bunch of it but I was concerned with the trimming aspect. The plating would be hard on the tools and I'm not so sure you wouldn't be loosing it on the necks over time.

Keeping them straight can be a pain on all the 223 based stuff. I use a magic marker and run a stripe around all mine for various cartridges and then as I load the mags I make sure I have all the same color. Of course making sure you have the right AR comes in handy too!!

I used to shoot a 7mm-08. I took a bunch of nickle plated Federal 308 and necked it down to 7mm-08 without any problems.

I shot it in "Silly-Wet" competition for a few years, and then necked it back up to 308, and continued to shoot it - I still have all of it, and I have had no problems with dies OR plating.

Never needed to trim it.

I've considered doing the opposite. Use Nickle for my 223 and unplatted for the 6x45s. I have two 6x45s that are hungry, and fed well...

I have so much brass 223 loaded up, lots of mixed for my AR's and all lapua for my bolt guns and the nickle would be an easy standout to say in my mind not the 223. I do it with my standard 308 loads, brass/lapua cases are supersonic and I have all my sub 308 loads in nickle cases.

I didn't read the whole thread but to answer your original question, my Hornady dies work great. I get once fired LC brass, lube it, then run it through the 6x45 die.... that simple!
