Is casing a type of skinning process? I've heard of it, just not sure what it refers to in terms of skinning. Can anyone provide some info?

Thanks a bunch!

Skinning for fur, there are basically two types

Cased...When you start at the back legs and skin towards the nose. Kinda like pulling a sweatshirt off your body and it ends up inside out.

Open....Initial cut is straight up the belly from butt to under the chin. In my area this is just used on beavers. They are stretched round.

I havent found any good info or diagrams or anything to show ya but I can suggest a book thats taught me quite a bit about skinnin critters. Its called The Complete Book of Tanning Skins and Furs by James Churchill.
If you gonna sell the furs you harvest you want to Case skin them unless you get a beaver like R. Shaw already pointed out.Or unless you want to tan the fur and make it into a rug and keep it for yourself then you'll want to Open skin it unless you like the looks of Case skinned pelts better.I do for some reason so thats how Im gonna skin all the critters I get.
