CC Hand gun for a lady

Today my aunt (62 yo) ask me if I could recommend a hand gun. She is concerned with all of the burglaries in her area. I was very surprised as she has never hunted with any of us or taken any interest in guns up until now. She was thinking a 9mm that holds 10-12 shots. I mentioned the 380 Ruger LCP with laser grips. Any others that will be user friendly and compact for a lady? Thanks

I'm looking into a revolver for my wife as well. Less need to worry about fail to fire/feed. I don't care for the hammerless type though unless you are going to practice a fair bit to get the hand of the long trigger pull. A 38 should be a decent caliber without a ton of recoil.

I think a mid-size .38/.357 revolver with a 4" barrel might be idea for your aunt. A non-gun person who probably won't dedicate much time to really master manipulating the firearm could do much worse.

I second the revolver idea. I have a Kel-Tec P3AT .380 which is very similar to the LCP in size and looks.

It conceals very well and is quite accurate but is like a firecracker going off in your hand. Hurts after 3-4 shots. No big deal but not much fun for a woman new to guns.

Here's the keltec for an idea of size. Hard to go any smaller and be able to shoot halfway accurately.

On the other hand it does hold 6+1 of .380 auto. So that's 7 rounds instead of 5 or 6

I bought my wife a Walther pk380, and she loves it, the slide on the gun is easy for a lady to pull back, and the trigger is not awful when you are using it with the hammer down (or double action). Then again you can choose whether to have it in single/double action mode, my wife has hammer down and its not too small to where her hand wont fit, its just the right size for an average lady's hand and pretty comfortable IMO. My suggestion is to take your aunt to the gun shop and take all of our suggestions and let her get a feel of what she likes best.

Good luck to you and your Aunt in your decision.

This should be one of the first things SHE should try when looking at pistols.

Just make sure to get her out there and sling some lead!

My wife has a stainless Kahr Lady K9 9mm with tritium sights... and you just know I've taught her how to manipulate the handgun, the manual of arms, malfunction drills, ect. She shoots my M&P 9mm every bit as well, probably better than her Kahr. She also has a little Remington Youth Model 870 20 gauge and absolutely fell in love with the AR-15. She knows a bit about basic tactics and how to put them in place when needed. We shoot together often; I shoot at least once weekly, she usually shoots every other week. The wife loves to shoot and has an interest in it and does quite well.

To the point, my Mom (72 years old) refuses to dedicate that much time or interest to shooting. She has an S&W M15 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special with a 4" barrel. She likes the fit and feel of the standard skinny grips with a Tyler T-grip adapter. I have it loaded with standard velocity target wadcutters. That's about all Mom can handle. Mom knows how to load it and it is simple to fire and operate. I can get Mom out to shoot a couple times in the summer, that's all. Of course, Dad is home and has a Beretta 9mm and a Mossberg .12 gauge handy. And the old man can handle both of them.

Interest level, available time, and physical size/ability play a role in the choice of firearm for home defense

Ruger lcr is what my wife picked after 2 380's she went back to the wheel gun. Tried alot of them out. The s&w bodygaurd was 2nd on her list but she liked the ruger better. Of course they came out with one in 357 like 2 months after she bought hers. It weighs 4 oz more. But hey she likes her gun.

Depends on the person, hand size/strength, and comprehension.
The Walther .380 didn't work out so well here. First attempt at range produced a jamb from not completing cycle. Next problem despite warning ended up with a pinch cut on thumb.
All this with zero problems operating a Ruger MKII .22

This resulted in a trade for a SW stainless revolver .357. Hammerless for shoot or no shoot. No oops maybe if. Pull the trigger and shoot or not.
A .32 may notbe a bad choice.

Of course for myself is somewhat different.

A snub nosed .38 special would be a pretty good choice. Can find really good value in Taurus. There's an ultralight model that comes with a laser grip for right around $500 if I remember correctly.

I was thinking the same thing but she wants to carry in her perse as well.

Since she is not an experienced shooter, beware of the autos with too many "switches" to fumble with in a crisis situation. Something like the Kel Tec and Diamondback 9s and 380s would work fine. I am looking at a Kahr CW9 for my daughter, who has taken over my Kel Tec PF9 for the time being. But the slide is a bit heavy for her. She had to relearn her technique for racking the slide to get more leverage.

I tend to recommend revolvers for ladies who are new shooters. A friends wife loves the Judge, but that is clunky to conceal. I like the S&W Bodyguard with built in laser.
