Hey everyone im new to the forum! ive shotgun hunted yotes for the past 3 years now in close cover wooded areas. i now have access to a wide open field and a yote trail that runs 70 yards away on the opposite fence row ill be on(scouted it out and found scat and tons of tracks) . my question is do any of you or have any of you had success using a 22lr while yote huntin. i dont have the funds to get my 22-250 yet, and i dont have access to any other centerfire rifles, just wondering what your alls input on this might be. i use CCI mini mag HP my marlin cant shoot hypervelocity ammo.

You can shoot them with it but it better be in the head and pretty close say 50 yards or less. If I was going to do that I would probably just take a shotgun. Just my opinion though..

First off, welcome to the Board and the sport!

Although a .22lr can kill a coyote, they will not kill them consistently, reliably and quickly under varied conditions. Either use enough patience and restraint to call them into your shotgun's range (easier said than done!) or get a Dead Coyote choke tube for your shotgun with Dead Coyote or #4 buck. You should have a 70 yard range with that combo. Leave the .22lr home. You wouldn't want to wound them or have them run off to die using a .22.

Good luck. Post some pics when you make that kill!

I shot one in the ribs last year from 45 yards using CCI Stingers and it ran off.I told myself that was a stupid idea and that I would never do that again. This year I got a shot at a coyote from 35 yards with my 10/22 and had a perfect headshot on it so decided to give it another try.I put the crosshairs between the eyes and popped it with a Federal HP that come in the bulk packs and it ran off.Im NEVER using a .22lr on a coyote ever again.Unless its from point blank range and its foot is in a trap.
To answer your question though. No a .22lr is'nt a good choice for coyotes.
