Centerfire on Tennessee WMA's ????

I know that I can't hunt yotes on the WMA's during Turkey season, etc. Question is.....can I hunt during the summer and other times when other hunts aren't going on with a CENTERFIRE round, or am I limited to RIMFIRE? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Seems that this isn't spelled-out in TWRA'a hunting guide. I called the Region (3) office, and they couldn't answer the question!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Post update......just got off the phone with Rick Moats @ Catoosa WMA. According to him, the only time you are allowed in the Tennessee WMA's with ANY type of firearm is when there is another season in progress...such as Turkey, Deer, Squirrel, etc. And the firearm has to be legal for THAT season. Squirrel/rimfire, deer/centerfire, etc. This kinda puts a new twist on the fact that coyote season is open year-round, huh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Maybe I'm stupid for even wondering about this, or for not knowing the facts, but I couldn't make sense of the fact that coyote is open year-round, but you still can't hunt on a WMA except during another season. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Food for thought and useful knowledge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Wait a minute. Your saying that the ONLY time your allowed on WMA is when another season is open? So if no season is open except coyote your not allowed on WMA with any caliber? I really hate the TWRA regs book. Every time I open it up I get more and more confused.

THAT IS CORRECT.

And yeah, I think it stinks also! Worst part is this: You can't hunt on a WMA at ANYTIME with a .223, .22 hornet, .220 swift, or any other caliber less than .24 unless it's a rimfire. And a rimfire is legal only if it's squirrel season. During deer season, you can shoot yotes with a centerfire, but only if it's .24 or larger.

I know this sounds crazy, but I had a 30 minute conversation with the TWRA warden in charge of Catoosa, and he was very clear on this.

In a nutshell.......we REALLY don't have a coyote season on the WMA's. But you can shoot a yote anytime you are hunting LEGALLY for anything else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

The hunting regulations have caused much confusion, and yes, you get about 45 days total use each year in a TWA. Dang people, write the TWRC (the appointees) and vote next year (the elected). The commission meets next week to discuss hunting issues for next year. Write or call this man before the 27-28 Apr TWRC meeting. TWRA enforcement could care less, because they wrote the regs for their benefit and ease of enforcement. Those hunting regulations need to be clear and concise, or we should issue some torts against entrapment.

I would quickly write this person with a clear, concise, and accurate email of what you want.

I inquired about hunting coyotes in Catoosa WMA when no specific hunt was being held. The WMA manager went into spasms.

I then mentioned calling coyotes during a specified season, and he went into convulsions.......

One tip in Tennessee: Muzzleloaders are legal for small game, and they are death on coyotes. Leave a great blood trail.

Crittr, so glad to see you hangin around again.I am surprised at the mans attitude really. They look favorably on us here. But Deer and Squirrel hunters do have the upper hand when it comes to making the regs.Mebbe we should get out our walking sticks and whomp 'um once or twice to get their attention. Jimmie

Critr, I talked to Rick Moats @ Catoosa, and he said, in relation to hunting yotes, "I wish you'd come shoot them ALL!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Then he told me that I was welcome to hunt them, but ONLY during another season, i.e. squirrel, deer, etc, and I would have to comply with the other season in relation to firearms, tactics, permits, etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Kinda like a Chinese FireDrill in Tennessee, huh?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Hey Critr!

Good to see you on here! Katie asked me the other day if I ever talked to you. You made a big impression on her at the LBL hunt last year. Lots of things have changed for the girls and me since then but we will survive. Hope all is well and also hope to see you here more often. I always thought you might be lurking out there!LOL
