centerfire scope for 22lr?

Can i use a center fire scope on a 22lr? i have a Simmons 3-9-40 i mounted but haven't hunted with it or sighted it in yet and just wondering should i go with an actual rimfire scope or one with an AO?

I am interested in a vortex 2-7-33 rimfire model with v plex crosshairs but not sure if the 7x is enough for squirrel hunting. im also interested in a couple bushnells with AO and vortex 4-12-44 with AO.
 
I have a 2-7 on my 22lr, and 7x is is more than enough for squirrel hunting in the woods. I used a fixed 4x for years and never felt under powered when squirrel hunting. I would've put a 4x on my current 22lr, but found the 2-7 (VX-1 rimfire) for less than its equal (FX-1 rimfire) in 4x.
 
Im running a luepold 2x7 on my cz 17m2 and think its about a perfect squirrel set up you could have.i have run centerfire scopez on 22lr 17hmr and 22mag and never had any trouble hunting but they were 3x9 are smaller.imo i don't think you will run into any problems with paralex if u stay under say 10 power.now shooting targets for small groups is a different animal.i need every advantage i can get doing that...
 
All of the above comments are spot on. The only thing I would add is to make sure the scope size is in proportion to the rifle size. I have seen some really big scopes mounted on smallish rimfire rifles.
 
Parallax error increases with magnification, so if I am using a centerfire scope on a .22 rf I don't want too much magnification. I hunted for years with a 4x32 centerfire scope and did not feel at a disadvantage on game. More magnification is nice for targets, but a squirrels head is an easy target at any reasonable range with 4x. To me the secret to using a centerfire non-AO scope is getting a consistent cheek weld each shot.
 
It may just be my old eyes, but when I get the X-hairs on a
non-AO scope crystal clear, the target is blurry....adjust so
the target is clear, then can barely make out the X-hairs! I
NEED an AO scope at any range.

Just did some scope switching on a couple of rimfires, Put a
Bushy 3200 5-15 AO on a CZ455 in .22mag, and a Bushy Banner
4-12 Dusk to Dawn AO on a Marlin 17hmr. Shot one-hole 5-shot
groups with both yesterday at my short 30yd range. It was just
too nice to have crystal clear shooting, both X-hairs and
bull's eye!
 
I have used non-A/O centerfire scopes on rimfire and done OK, but for consistent accuracy and clear view, an A/O scope is the way to go.
 
There are a few made with lower focus ranges. Nikon target efr, leupold efr, weaver rv9, weaver v16, bushnell legend ultra hd, clearidge rm. I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of right now
 
The AO Banner goes down to 10yds and doesn't break the bank.
HOWEVER, I would want to be able to physically look through one
before purchasing. Mine is older model made in Korea with very
good glass, and I looked through a newer model (don't recall
where they're made now, but not Korea). It was a little hazy.

Forgot about the UTG on my Benjamin. It is AO, adjusts 5yds
to infinity and I wouldn't hesitate putting one on a rimfire,
or even a centerfire:

I gave up on bushnell about 2010 when i shot a deer with my slug gun the day after checking zero and the back glass popped out and they told me too bad so sad. ended up wounding the deer and had to have a buddy put it down. I looked at the 3.5-10-36 rimfire model with AO at midway as its on sale and 25% off but i don't like not being able to look through it. midway is also offering $40 off vortex crossfires so its a hard one to choose. vortex 2-7 rimfire or the bushnell 3.5-10.
