Centering Millet Angle-Loc rings...???

Ok so I just came home with a used .223 Savage Model 10. It had a trashed out Simmons scope on it so Im going to mount a different scope on it, it has the Millet Angle-Loc rings on it and Im curious as to how some of you go about making sure the windage adjustable bases are centered when you mount the scope. I read in one search to screw all the screws in all the way, then back one side out 1 3/4 turns then mount the rings on the bases, supposedly this starts you out pretty uch centered. Does this sound close to any of you that may have these rings? Thanks for any help.

Im going to get my calpiers out and play around with them to see if I can figure out a way to get them centered, but would love to hear any ideas. Thanks for any help.
 
I'd recommend you get another set of rings if you can.

The Milletts are pretty good rings if you have the tools to align them, but if they aren't aligned they'll wreck a good scope pretty quick. I used the alignment bars in the Wheeler Engineering kit.

They earned the nickname "Mangle-Locs."
 
After fartin around with them a while I have them pretty dang close according to a machinist scale...I think I can get them pretty close to dead-nuts if I can find my dang calpiers.
 
I've used a set of them before and wound up locking the rifle in a cradle and bore sighting it on a distant object about 100 yards away...

Set the scope in the rings, tightened, with the mounting nuts really loose and then adjust the front and back ring windage nuts to bring the windage to where the scope is aligned with the bore sight view...

That will generally get you on paper, without putting undue stress on the scope...Hope all this makes sense...

Where some get into problems is tightening down the windage mounting nuts first and then trying to force the scope into the actual rings and cranking those bolts down...
 
Thats exactly what I just got done doing Turtle...I have to say Im not impressed with these rings at all...too damned much fartin around to get them straight and too many moovin parts to work loose. They will do until I can get some better rings I reckon though. Going to take it out tomorrow and see what it will do on paper.
 
Well I decided to go do a quick sight-in earlier this evening. So far everything looks good...groups were as to be expected considering I was using some cheapo Remington bulk ammo and a not so perfect rest, (over the roof of the car with a rolled up jacket)... 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards....good enough for now until I get some better ammo or make up some handloads.

Yep, I farted around with several sets before I wised up. They just ain't worth the trouble to me.
 
They are pretty strong and will hold the scope tight but I would never consider using them if I was starting from scratch. If I bought a used gun with a scope already mounted? Maybe.

I would much rather just use Leupold standard or Leupold dual dovetails and be done with it. Why mess around?
 
Thats what the situation was here...its a used rifle and already had the Angle-Locs on it. I switched the scope out cause the one that was on it was trashed, so I figured I may as well check everything.
I removed the Angle locs to check the bases to make sure they were tight...they werent. So, I just stripped them off and gave everything a good cleaning with brake claeaner and remounted everything to ensure it was all tight and properly done.
I will eventually replace them with something else because along with not liking the design they are way too high for my liking.
