Cerakote barreled action

I has an SS Ruger rebarreled a few months back. It was shiny SS, had the gunsmith bead blast it. It looks ok, but is still a little shinier than I'd like. I'm halfway thinking of cerakoting, which I know is frequently recommended here.

If I do it I'll probably do it in a black color, or maybe a dark grey. I need to decide because I have a Mcmillan ordered, and may alter my paint choice if I cerakote.

How does it hold up? Anything else I should consider?

My main concern is that if I coat it in black, scratches will really show.

If you use H-series you'll have to try pretty hard to scratch it with normal use and even if you do, they will have to be serious to go all the way through to the metal and "really show"

There are tons of colors to choose. Lots of grey, lots of black, lots and LOTS of tan and green and even colors that are "McMillan colors"

Why not wait to do it AFTER your stock arrives?
 
I could wait, no hurry, I just might change the color a bit on the stock if I'm gonna change the metal to matte black from satin SS. I ordered a straight olive painted MKII classic stock, I think the plain olive will look good with SS. If I go black though I could make it a speckletone with black flecks. Or I guess I could do what most guys are doing here and make it a swirl.
 
If you were going to go satin SS, why not just have your stainless rifle bead blasted? No worry about chipping then, and you should be able to get it blasted for about the same price as ceracoated.

It probably costs more to remove it than it does to apply it. It doesn't come off easy.

I generally like stainless but decided to cerakote my last rifle and really like it. Of course... It really wouldn't have looked all that good stainless anyhow!

I think it looks very good FH, I like the painted tan stock with matte black steel.

I ordered the McM olive painted stock. It would go with either I guess. So I should prob just wait and drop the gun in an see if I like it. I plan to carry it more after I re-stock it though, and I'd have to camo wrap that SS for sure. That's why I'm thinking on cerakote black.

I just took a blued encore action and had it coated to match a bead blasted stainless barrel. Couldn't be happier with the way they matched up.
 
Cerakote is very tuff stuff, I have it on several of my guns and am set up to shoot it on also. There are about 60 or more colors to choose from. You wont regret having it done, pm me if you want to know more about it, thanks.
 
I just had my 22-250ai cerekoted tac grey, it had a stainless barrel and blued action, I am hooked on the cerekoted now it really makes a gun look clean and purrty
 
I have a buddy that did the action in black, bolt and barrel in a dark grey. He left the jeweling on the bolt exposed. Looks real sharp
 
You won't be disappointed with Cerakote, not only looks great, but wears like iron! I've done 4 rifles, and each time I get one back...So excited!

If it looked like thick paint it was done incorrectly. I'll post a few close ups of mine tomorrow for you. Its an extremely nice finish when done correctly.

The last rifle I had coated I used Armor Black and am very pleased. The gentleman who did it for me stated he much preferred Armor black to Graphite black for exactly that reason... he said that Graphite black always ended up looking like paint to him. Maybe it's his method of application, but he sure did a beautiful job using Armor black.

I have a couple other rifles coated with Graphite black, each done by different people and I would tend to agree that it looks much more like paint to me. The Armor black also matches the anodizing on a Nightforce scope very well.
