Chaos and Confusion

Second time out this year, and made one set, 59 degrees, 85% humidity, light wind out of the SW.

Went to one of my favorite fields last night, and have never had so much chaos & confusion on a stand ever.

Set up on a grassy fence row facing east looking over a bare field, caller on the edge of the standing corn to my right 80 yards out, another corn strip to my left, with woods below that.

I started with two lonesome howls, & got an immediate answer from a group down in the woods. I waited for them to finish, then tried to figure what to do next, do I sit quiet or call? I gave out two more howls, and saw one bust out of the corn directly away from me, 450 yards out by the telephone poles.

I started the video, then he disappeared in a swale, reappeared at the corn, out of sight in another swale, & finally in the open heading for the caller.

It was all over in under 4 minutes.

He piled up at the corn's edge, or so I thought. Sitting there, all proud of myself, when I scanned out in front of me, & there was another one heading towards to caller. By the time I got the tripod moved back up that direction, he was in the corn.....dammit, where'd he come from?

So I'm sitting there thinking how I missed out on a double, when I scanned down to my left again, & another one was in the field at 40 yards! I got the tripod moved back over and got a shot off, pretty sure that I dumped him in the corn. But then I saw another, & shot again.

So as I scanned the field again, and here comes another up & off to the right beyond the caller heading down the hill. He stopped at/in the corn, I shot, shot again, & shot a third time, again pretty sure I got him.

When the smoke cleared, I had no idea how many coyotes I saw, or how many rounds I shot. I'm still kinda confused on what, & exactly how, it all transpired. Unfortunately, I shut the video off after the 1st one. It was so chaotic, there was no time to fire it back up. Too bad, as it would have helped straighten out the events, & certainly would have entertaining!

I never found a one last night. The 1st one piled up at the corn's edge, but wasn't there when I went to look? I walked back & forth scanning & spotlighting, but came up empty. I decided I would go back in the morning to look around. By the time I got back to the truck and only a mile down the road to the next spot, it started raining, so I went home.

This morning I went out & walked the corn rows, and right away found what I think was probably #1, about 5 rows in. I spent an hour or so, & finally gave up, it was 80 degrees & I was sweating my ass off. With last night's rain, there was no chance of finding blood anyway.

Despite only one confirmed, it sure was a blast.

Sounds like a crazy ride, alf! Congrats on the one you found. While we all love it when things get western, I always kind of hope it doesn't happen on the first few hunts of the year. I much prefer to get a few slow controlled hunts under my belt to get myself leveled out! Lol... Your hunt sounds like a blast though. Congrats again.

Congrats on getting the year started with a bang and a bang and a few more bangs. 2nd stand of the year-I am jealous Al :giggle:. Been there, done that and though it is a rush, I don't particularly like that chaos. As a matter of fact, I had a similar set Weds. night, 3min 47sec and 3 deaduns.

Five minutes of that will give quite an adrenaline rush Alf. Congrats for sure! Hey Mike, sounds like you just needed some encouragement :).

Congrats on the 3fer.

This was one of the very few times I wished I had been standing rather than sitting on this stand. It was frustrating to try to move the tripod back & forth with the legs getting tangled up in the grass & weeds. I had to literately pick it waay up to free it's grip from the tangle, with one time setting it down hard enough to set off Foxbang. Another time the leg got moved & locked into the 1st notch rather than the 2nd, making the gun too damn high to see through the scope.

Look in Webster's & you'll see this stand listed under clusterfxxk....ha ha....

Sounds like a blast!! Thanks for clarifying you were sitting, I was wondering why you were moving the tripod because I stand and move and was trying to figure out the reason while reading it. I really see what a cluster that was now, lol. Sounds like you handled it quite well.

The fence row I'm in is kind of the high point of the field, with the pasture behind me tapering down, so I feel I'd be somewhat sky lined by standing.

It's worked well in the past, coyote shows up, gets shot, done deal.

Exactly what happened here, but then the circus showed up.....😲😲
