Chargemaster or Harrels???

My chargemaster just died. I am considering replacing it with a Harrels premium. I do use lots of Varget and I load pistol rounds down in the 8 grain range. The Harrels will do 6 to 120 grains. Will either of these things be an issue with the Harrels? Thanks.

I just had a CM crap on me, I asked RCBS about fixing or trash. Was told toss it, so I did. What a waste of money it was...

The Harrell's Prem is well built. I'd like to try one myself.

My Chargemaster has loaded thousands of rounds, and has run very well for me. I would have a very hard time doing without mine at this point. Speed and accuracy with mine has been very good, I have had no issues. The versatility of changing loads rapidly while testing is especially nice.

However, the Chargemaster is electronic. Like all things electronic, I know mine will fail at some point. It isn't a question of if, it is a question of when, and how much use I get out of it first. Electronic things randomly go [beeep]-up, that is just a fact. And, when power is down, so are you. It has some good advantages, but it has some drawbacks as well.

The Harrell's is a quality piece of mechanical equipment. There should be no reason for it to ever go bad. It doesn't require power, and for powders that flow well, speed and accuracy is good. The main drawback IMO of a measure, is big charges of stick powders that don't flow well. That is one place I think the Chargemaster wins. Smaller charges or a powder that flows really well, the measure wins.

I think a complete loading bench has both. Loading my 270 with H4831, Chargemaster wins easily. Loading my 223 with W-748, my Redding BR-3 wins hands down, since it is just as accurate and 3 times as fast. That is how my thought process works.

I love my Chargemaster and my electric trimmer but I have multiple manual backups for both.

Not a Harrels, but I have a Uniflow that I have done everything I can to make it as accurate as possible. Just recently picked up a Chargemaster, and until I go back to ball powder the Uniflow will be collecting dust. Even shorter grain stick powders like 8208 XBR are not as accurate as my liking in the Uniflow. I'm sure the Harrels is a better piece than my Uniflow, but if my chargemaster broke it would be replaced. That said, I have no plans to sell the Uniflow, redundancy is a good thing.

Thanks everyone for the input. I still have not decided. I will probably get the Harrels and see how it goes. I love the RCBS I just don't want to buy one every few years when it dies.

Maybe you should look into the Pact . They are the ones that originally made the CM for RCBS . Although I'm told the Pact is slower . But is a USA made product with a good guarantee .

Charge masters die, figure a new one. Brother is on his third, I have a lyman, still working.

I have A Harrels, and I have never regretted buying it. I also have two redding br 30's.

All things electronic burn out and wear out, ever wonder how long plastic gears and bearing races will last?

I lost my CM on an electrical storm along with the fax and frig.

Well, I can buy just a new dispenser as the scale still works. Even though they will die it does spoil you. I think I will also save my allowance for a bit and get the Harrell's. I just think the Harrell is really nice and I want one! Thanks everyone for the input.

I have a Harrell's and it doesn't get used much. It's great for powders that meter really well. But for everything else, my Lee Perfect Powder measure beats the snot out of it.
