Charging Handle and Bolt Carrier Group?

Ive been doing some looking around and am going to try to raise some funds for my first ar but I have no experience with them what so ever. Ive never even shot one. It seems like every upper I have looked at ask if you want to add options. The two im seeing the most are charging handle and bolt carrier group. My question to you is what exactly are the functions of these two items and are they good to have? Thanks in advance, Josh

Well, they're both definitely good to have, lol... The bolt carrier group is basically your bolt, firing pin, extractor and the like... There are different configurations of charging handles, but the purpose of it is to manually cycle the weapons action to say load or unload the weapon... A standard charging handle is located on top of the weapon behind the carry handle or optics rail... You'll need them both before it goes bang

Maybe the ones I seen are just extra options that are better than there standard ones bc these have all been complete uppers that I have looked at.

Getting a quality BCG will minimize the headaches down the road from an improperly staked gas key or other such overlooked details. That doesn't mean that you have to break the bank for one either though. Just do some research and get one from a reputable manufacturer.

A charging handle was a charging handle until a few years ago. If you are going to put a scope on your AR I would highly recommend an extended latch charging handle. I use the BCM Gunfighter and it has made charging the gun much easier with a scope on.

As you will find, there are unlimited options to customize an AR these days. Do some research before jumping into too many gadgets or you will find yourself with a box full of AR parts. Which isn't always a bad thing!

If it's Model One Sales, the price listed is without the BCG and charging handle. You need to add that to the price.

Their standard BCG is fine, I've got one. Carrier key is staked and it's all finished out just like my Olympic Arms - I suspect they may buy them from Oly (the one I got, anyway).

Our most popular Bolt Carrier Group/Charging handle combo seems to be these:

Spike's Tactical BCG:$114.95

BCM Gunfighter Mod4 Latch $46.95

or:

Nordic Components Billet Charging Handle w/ Tac Latch $40.95

There are lots of options to upgrade, however. Latches are really easy to replace and not incredibly expensive to swap around to get more ergonomic.

Chrome bolts are a nice upgrade, but IMO, you might be better suited getting spending more money on a full auto bolt carrier than on a chrome semi auto bolt. Whichever bolt you get, just make sure the gas keys are staked properly.
