Cheap Gun Storage Ideas?

Another possibility is taking the guns apart and put pieces in the safe. The lower 1/2 of an AR or bolts out of bolt action rifles as examples. Then leave a big sign on them saying parts are missing so not usable.

Hey Jeff,
Once you get that thing made, get yourself two tuna fish cans filled with cat litter and put them inside. Much cheaper, and works as well or better that a Golden Rod for moisture protection. Clean the cans well, load them with cat litter, and cap them with plastic wrap and a rubber band to hold it in place. Poke some holes in the top and place it inside. I lived in Maryland for years, and this is the only thing I ever used on my safe, and it came with a Golden Rod. It has never been out of the package in 11 years, and I have never had any kind of a rust issue.

Never heard of using cat litter to absorb the moisture in the air. I'll darn sure be giving it a try.

For about the last 10 years during the summer when we have the swamp cooler going, I have been using a product called DampRid in my gun room and storage cabinets. It works fantastic, but no place around our dry climate carries the stuff. So I order it and have it shipped. Kind of a pain in the butt.

From the research I've done on household moisture absorbants, calcium chloride chips or flakes is about the best thing going. DampRid is nothing more than calcium chloride.

I'll try the kitty litter. Thanks.
