Cheap Version of Partitions and Barnes TTSX....?

I know a guy who wants to shoot Partitions or Barnes TTSX bullets in his 243... for deer.... but he's too cheap to pay the heavy prices for them... SO.... what would be similar as far as penetration and knock down power...?

Complaining about hunting bullet prices is idiotic imo. A box of ttsx, which are awesome, is 35-40 as a guess. If you shoot 3 to check zero every year, and then 1 in a deer, that 1 box lasts over a decade.

Plinking, punching paper, cost is an issue. Hunting bullets, cost shouldn't be an issue.

In my experience, any decent bullet will kill a deer. Hornady Interloc, Speer Hotcore, Sierra Gameking and even just bulk no-name Soft points preform well enough for deer. Hornady and Sierra are my first choices for budget hunting bullets.

Skimping on the only thing that actually connects you with your game is false economy in my opinion. That said, lots of deer have died after being shot with basic cup and core bullets. For moderate velocity cartridges, regular ol' jacketed lead bullets can easily get the job done, and I shoot them. But usually, given the choice, I'll spend the few extra bucks for a premium bullet that I know will perform as expected. If nothing else, I like the margin of error gained when using a premium.

Reminds me of a story....
28hrs + of driving, gas, a place to stay, caribou tags. Old boy I was with broke a back on a bou with a 300WM. It's flip floppn around .... he would not "waste" another bullet to finish it off.

That's plain sad....

He is not against buying premium bullets...he just wanted to know if he could find something else that was just as good.... but cheaper than 35.00 for ONLY 50 bullets.

I'll tell him that you guys said.... Don't be so Cheap...LOL.

Lots of good bullets. Speer hotcor, grand slam, sierra pro hunter, nosler bt, partition, hornady interbond, sst. The grand slams are some of my favorite bullets. Sort of out of style nowdays, but they shoot extremely well out of my markv. They wll all kill deer at home. I have loaded a bunch of remington bulk bullets from midway back in the day. The more a hunt costs though the more I want my weatherby with those grand slams. Confidence is priceless.

Don't doubt it. Before their fire, I picked up a bunch of 100 gr. Solid Base Nosler seconds from the pro shop. They apparently were an overrun as they had a cannelure and the discontinued solid base bullets I am told did not??

Any rate, they are great bullets in the 243 WSSM. Have shot a lot of deer and hogs with them and the solid base & heavy jacket near base holds the bullet together very well for good penetration and they're a bit more accurate than the NP's.

I am told the ballistic tips have a solid base, as well.

Regards,
hm

I run the 95g NHBT in my 6x45, 6x6.8 & .243. Its the dogs woof on medium game.
Everything I've taken with that bullet has been a 1 shot & drop deal.

90 gr Nozler Ballistic Tips running at 3015 fps, 243 did not do what I was expecting this year on a big sow hog, shot at 40 yds through the lung area, and she ran 100 yds before dropping, with two holes in her sides...she bleed... but ran too far for my liking.

I gave them another try on deer. A small buck shot straight in the chest at 90yds did drop, and it should have as well. The next day another small buck had this bullet enter just left of it's front leg, brisket area, on a quarter angle to me, the bullet did not pass through but later found the opposite area around the lungs, bloodshot pretty bad under the hide.. which is fine. Everything stopped just under the hide, and I could not find one particle or fragment of a bullet jacket. That means the bullet totally blew up, which is still ok with me, except for one thing.... it ran 40 yds with no blood... I could barely find the entrance hole.

The point is... it did not drop... it did not bleed... it ran too far.

I know everyone will say...Shoot the Shoulder.

But my thinking is.... that it should be effective if shot placement is anywhere in that area.

Running with no blood in open areas, is fine...but not in swampy or deep woods.

I guess something more solid is required.... more shocking... more intact.

Everything points towards 100 gr flat base type bullets... we'll see... thanks Guys.
