Cheaper Than Dirt

Ill have to stop by the Wal-Mart between here and work tomorrow and see if they have one on the shelf. They had a .308 last time I was in there and it was just the rifle. She's looking for a package deal bc thats going to be the cheapest and easiest way to get him a ready to go deer rifle on her budget. I will also take another look at their catalog and see what they say.

I think I would ask for a second opinion from someone who knows what they are talking about. FWIW I think a savage axis should be on the shelf though, it has to be one of their better sellers.

+1 on the book behind the counter, last time I inquired about ordering there was no mention about a fee.

Speaking with one of the sales guys a while back, Walmart doesn't charge extra to order a gun, so no fees. BUT, if it's not something they regularly stock, it's not as cheap. They get an axis in xxx caliber as regular stock, you want yyy instead it's a special order. You want xxx but they're out, it goes in the next regular order, comes in sooner, but at the cheaper price. Still usually cheaper than other gun stores.

Lots of dealers hate Bud's because they make them look bad with the pricing. Bud's is good to go. Might check with another FFL. We have a few FFL's around here that don't try to compete with Bud's. They accept transfers all the time. Matter of fact Bud's has a search feature that will show you FFL's in your area that do transfers from them.

My only transaction with Buds was for 2 pistols. I asked the FFL(storefront) I was dealing with if they would match the buds price including the transfer fee etc or at least come close and if so I would just buy from him.

He says "No, they can sell for that much because they don't have to let the pistols sit on their shelf, they just order them in. If I did that I could sell at the same price." Ok says I, YOU don't have to let them sit on your shelf either since they're not your regular stock. All YOU have to do is order them in and hand them to me. In the end, he got the minimal transfer fees and Buds got to sell 2 guns. 0 logic there as far as I can tell.

Buds shipped fast and they were in my hand in a very reasonable amount of time.

All the walmarts I've been to lately have the bolt action Savage rifles with black synthetic stocks for $267 on their shelves. Seems like a great option for you.

I have to ask, does the husband subscribe to this, "buy cheap because it's what I can afford" theory?

I ask because I'd way rather have, say, a $300 gift certificate for a manners, than a cheap weapon/scope combo I'd just end up trading in or selling.

I want quality components, the thought is there, she hopefully knows her husband well enough to know what he'd like, but, if he's like me, a custom barrel, stock, a new action... Etc. Would be the way to go in this situation.

Her husband isnt going to care one way or another. Hes not a benchrest shooter and wants a gun specifically for deer hunting in November. It will never get used other than then. The Axis is cheap in price but will shoot right up there with guns costing twice as much. I own one in .22-250 that the wife shoots and its a tack driver. A custom job is not needed for hunting purposes. No offense but if a guy cant take a decent factory gun and hit a deer at 100 yards they dont have any business being in the woods. Just my opinion.

The axis is inexpensive. Not necessarily cheap. They work...

No beauty contest or bench rest here. Just a minute of deer gun. It outta work.

They are local to me, that place is good entertainment for weekends. The several over-weight mall ninjas manning the gun counter act like they just came off the front line in Afghanistan, and if it isn't a Glock its second rate paper weight material.

In my book Savage is about as quality as you can get. No need in spening a grand on a custom rifle when all its going to be used for is deer hunting. If he were into long range competitions it would be one thing but for the purpose this rifle is going to be intened, the Axis is plenty and will get the job done everytime. Anyways, this was a question about Cheaper Than Dirt, not about which gun she should get or why. But thanks for the input. My dealer was able to match the price on the net so she is going that route. Thanks, Josh

Why an axis? it has no "accutrigger" or "accustock" nothing different from the savage stevens and I know for a fact the stevens is a great shooter right out of the box..same price I think. The axis has a nicer looking stock and removable magazine but thats all I can tell by looking on the savage website. any savage you choose should good from what I understand.

I own a Stevens in .223 and an Axis in .22-250 and both are great shooters. Cant tell you which one is better because I havent shot the Axis enough but the stock trigger on it is ok for hunting purposes therefore he dont need the accutrigger. Around here the Axis is anywhere from $75 to $100 cheaper than the Stevens. Either one is a good choice but she dont want to spend more money than she has to being his first rifle. He only hunts deer and will only do that every once in awhile so she dont want to spend alot of money on something thats just going to set.

I thought the stevens was a cheaper gun sorry about that..was hoping to give you a cheaper option..but dont forget mossberg! I have a mossberg 100 atr in .270 that shoots good and paid $319 new from walmart. might be an option

Savage Axis. Detachable mag....accuracy....all at a price anyone can afford. For someone that wants to get by economicaly they can have their cake and eat it. Just not as much fancy decoration on it.

I ordered an AR from CTD and had absolutely no problems. I bought the gun on a Wednesday night, sent them my FFL's info at 6am the next morning and the next Monday I was picking it up from my FFL. Plus shipping was only 7 bucks and no tax.

I did call to make sure they had what I wanted in stock before I ordered it. I don't know how often they update the site, but I hate buying from somewhere that says they have it in stock and end up waiting weeks.

I would go for it, just call to verify they have it in stock. The lady I talked to was very nice.

I bought a Savage Edge(Axis) from Walmart a month or so ago.
While it's not a fancy gun, but it will drive tacks all day with almost any ammo!
I had a 6 pound trigger pull out of the box, but after a spring clip I have it setting at a crisp 3 pounds. I was so impressed that I have bought 2 more Savages.....and they ALL drive tacks!
Good luck on your choice.
