Children and Home Defense Weapons

All firearms are locked in the gunsafe when not being worked on, cleaned, or used. They are out quite a bit, and when my son sees them he comes over and checks them out. The keys to gun cabinet are too high for him to reach, and hes not really interested in them when I am not around. He really does enjoy checking them out together though.

Just kidding but its getting close to that bad.

You need to watch in Utah. One of my co-workers had CS and the cops show up at his house after he open hand swated his daughters hand. NO JOKE.

Alright, I need to say something. I was shooting a BB gun at about 8 years old. I rec'd a 20 guage at 10 years old for X-mas. I bought a .22 rifle with my paper route money six months later. I slept with the guns under my bed for years, ammo in the basement locked up, I had the key. Start your kids out with a red rider and shoot with them. You will be amazed how much they will respect guns. JMHO.

Fast forward about 20 years and now I have my first son. He is not quite 8 months and is very close to walking. He already crawls and pulls up on things (including my nightstand). He is now getting into things. At his age he obviously does not understand guns and there consequences. My wife did not grow up around guns and is beginning to get a little nervous about the pistol in my night stand (I must admit I agree that I need to do something differenct.) I am tempted to just move it out of the nightstand to a higher place where my son has absolutely no access, but that puts in in the closet. Has anyone ever used one of the fingerprint safes? I think a fingerprint safe would make more sense that a trigger lock or moving the pistol to the closet. Keep in mind that theft or loss in a fire is not the reason for this safe. I have a fireproof safe in the basement. How have you guys handled this situation? I must also add that my son cannot reach the top drawer of my nightstand where my pistol is located, but he will be able to before too long.

an 8 mo. old will not be able to work the action on a pistol, and I doubt could work a Da revolver
However you would not want them to get their hands on it reguardless......so I'd recomend moving it
to a higher place, non accessible. Now there'll be a time when he gains understanding about things..
My boys time was 6 I taught him how to shoot and what guns could do. however since you never know
how smart his little friends might be when they start coming over you might one day have to put under
lock and key sorry to say.....just more work for adults to do when you have kids.....
