Chilean model 1895 mauser

My wifes's uncle passed away unexpectedly and I spent most of last week helping to store his belongings for the pending probate/estate sale. His felony record precluded him from owning firearms but we found two black powder pistols and one old mauser in his closet.

The rifle looks complete and is in 75-80% condition. It is marked "Chilean model 1895" and the receiver is marked 7.62 with a "N" below it. My limited research says that it is a genuine pre-1899 (paperless transfer) mauser manufactured for the Chilean military, virtually identical to the Spanish model 1893 which saw use during the Spanish-American war. Additional research says that the Chilean government re-heat treated and chambered some of the former 7x57 rifles into .308 winchester. Sources on the internet claim these rechambered rifles are safe for medium pressure chamberings like .308, .30-06, 35 remington, .243, 250 savage, etc.

I will look the rifle over again closely to assure myself that it is all there, and to examine the bore, but hope to pick it up cheap.

If you could buy a small ring/.308/pre-FFL mauser in good working condition what would you do with it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I have several ideas but am open to suggestions.

Leave it the way it is there is getting less and less orginal Mausers everyone take them apart If it is in good shape all orginal and clean leave it be The 98 Mauser is the best one to build a custom gun on. Mauser

Is it a '98 mauser or a '95 mauser? The '98 cocks when you lift the bolt handle, the '95 cocks when you push the bolt forward. And i agree don't chop it up keep it original.

If it is original, leave it alone. There are plenty of actions available if you want to build a rifle. I have a custom '95 in a Fajen Mannlicher stock. Currently a 7mm Mauser, the barrel looks like the surface of the moon, only worse and I am planning the rebarrel as we speak. Either .257 Roberts or 6.5x55. Either one will make a great deer gun, even at the pressures that the '95's should be limited to.

The '95's are not as strong as the '98. Period. The argument is always, "Why can't I shoot higher pressure loads in my '95?" Go ahead, knock yourself out. Just don't ask me to stand next to you. For deer and similar sized creatures, the lower pressure rounds are more than adequate. There is no reason to load 'em up. Will it definitely blow up with a high pressure round? No. Will it definitely survive a high pressure round? No.

Keep the gun the way it is. It will be worth more in the long run.
