choices again.. 6mm BR?

Some have seen the newest acquisition of a Remington 700 ADL in .243 Win... And quite honestly the lead in is just a recap and musing on my part.
So my "hunting" buddy did a favor for me ??
He handed me a 30" barely shot 6mm BR barrel, now the tendon will need some rework to fit the 700, so yes the reamer will need to go back in. I set down and checked the twist .. 1-9 wow I thought finally one closer to me desired 1-12 /1-10 without a wait, excluding the setback and chambering work. And "should" reset the rounds count of what 100 rounds easily.
(now he knows I've been talking for years of doing one just never got around to doing it .. multiple reasons)
My response was well I'll just shoot the .243 to see how it shoots. He responds with "yeah that has killed a lot of projects they shoot just good enough to prevent a rechambering".
That stuck home.. yes that is about a truthful and honest answer as I've heard.
Musing out loud "nothing prevents the original barrel from going back in if I'm not impressed, or like it".

Then in our discussion he starts the corruption even further , "well you could also go Dasher or BRA" now the wheels are not turning but running at the ole' Star Trek warp 9 ....
Having dies for both the Dasher and the BR , as well as cases... The fate is pretty much sealed. And after a long consideration and looking over in the 6mm bore sizes I have I decided to go with the BR. Having a already excellent setup with a 6mm CM really sort of sealed the deal, really I mean if the need for speed is the quest well the CM will do pretty much what the Dasher , and the .243 will do , and I'll be the first admit that is a not exactly but close enough.

I did have a 721 in 6mm Ackley but that one was proving to be problematic so out came it's barrel and once out the issues became clear . Then a quick check of that barrel chambering was started. Which was all started because of the machining of the tendon. So I had decided to turn it back to a .30 caliber (.308 Win) and that was easy peasy, and barrel responses extremely well to tuning. So happy happy joy joy there.

Now enough of just catching up on the 6mm bores I've got, back to the ADL and the proposed 6mm BR. I'm pretty sure this would fill the bill on a varmint rifle, or am I missing something? Which honestly I don't think I am. While the Dasher and BRA are a great cartridge just like the original caliber, I suspect bit better longevity with the BR. although slower it sort of fills a niche, or maybe I'm just fooling myself.
Comments ? (powder suggestions, etc, etc welcome)
Hopefully @Bowhntr6pt weighs in as I'm really looking forward to someday in the near future to drag him along with my buddy Ed and I to Montana / Wy /and maybe SD regions.
(yes Bob I'm tagging you in as you been pretty quite these days LOL).

As always Thank you all for taking the time to read this.
Respectfully
Mike

Anything on the BR case is going to be good. As great as the barrel itself and the machine work will let it be.

Higher expansion ratio, longer barrel life. Not linear, but predictable enough.

Personal preference, I'd thread the muzzle for a can. I have a 28" barreled .22 Dasher. Ridiculously long with a TBAC U7. But not that much of a hassle for pulling out of the back seat to shoot rock chucks. Just make you smile quiet.

You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger Dasher fan than me, so I vote Dasher.

However, your definition of "varmint rifle" & usage need some clarity.

Single loading in a dog town is different than a magazine that feeds reliable in a coyote rifle.

I've had a handful of 700 's in a Dasher dedicated to coyote hunting with nary a bobble, but they've been know to be problematic.

I'd consider a 6GT in a calling rifle.

Yes Sir I did leave off barrel threading regardless it will be threaded for a can.
The Finished length "should" be in the 29" range so yes she will be long "belly" gun.
Your response actually caused me to break out the thread pitch gages and calipers ... 18TPI, @ 1.069" major diameter. shoulder depth 0.981" (hmm BAT, Kelby or Panda Action). so yes should finish out at 29" after the clean up on the tendon. Now the exact barrel maker I'm not sure of but the quality appears to be there?

Yes I did fail a bit relying on the word Varmint to my own usage of Predator vs Varmint definition.

The objective is gophers, PD's, not Yotes, wolves, pigs for this one. And yes the Dasher is compelling. I did leave out one important fact that My "smith" does have both reamers on hand so no waiting in that department, as well as the GT.

and as usual and always
Thank You both for weighing in.

Next question would be, what freebores do said reamers have?

Read my mind. Throating matters a good bit. And has been a cause of disatisfaction with many a custom chambered barrel. I have a slow twist .243AI that I got "Kiffed" on with a long throat. Not even close to the reamer print. Pissed me right off.

LOL yeah I've not asked yet and right now is the planning stages that will absolutely be my first questions with him....

What I do know is the BR is a JGS reamer (vintage unknown, BUT according to JGS website SHOULD be .272" neck and 0.092 Freebore)

Dasher he has the Manson and the JGS... (and the fact that JSG has actually three differing reamer in that cartridge, but Manson list 0.140" as their current production is that exactly what he has I'm Not sure)

ETA Yes the throating / freebore will be the top of my mind and I'll want as close to zero as I can get...... be it BR or Dasher......

Ironically, I just got done loading 350 rounds of Dasher rounds for one of my PD rigs this morning.

Honestly, I'm not sure which reamer was used, at worst it's a .104 freebore.

Anyhoo, I shoot 70 grain Sierra Blitzkings in a medium load at 3500, and they don't mind a big jump at all.

A little test I did this summer, four 5 shot groups at 100, about 2500 rounds down the tube:

at the risk of sounding like a "know it all" in the bullet naming, yes your in the direction I want to basically go with that bullet which is I'm pretty sure Sierra has a rename to SVK vs the SBK (heck it's the same bullet by either name) .... ...

And Like DAA being "Kiffed" I'm pretty sure I'll wear my "smith" out with the freebore length and insist as close to zero as I can get.
While knowing I'll have to put up with some, But I want it as small as possible. (do recall his posting about that).

When I came up with the posted choice I was "assuming" his BR reamer was probably the shortest freebore length. (yes a dangerous statement)

Which powder did you use out of couristity? (basically a sanity check on my end)

I'm using AA-2230-C in this particular gun which is an old pulled down powder equivalent to the current 2460.

My other slow twist I shoot VV-133 with 55 Ballistic Tips.

Well... all these other chamberings I have zero experience and/or knowledge as to their performance as compared to the .243 Win but I can tell you I do love me some .243 win.

I continue to read a lot of positive things about the 6mm Dasher though... and I'm sure what ever you end up with will be a fantastic hunting stick.

I've always said a guy should pick the bullet(s) he want to shoot, at the velocity he want to run them at, then pick the cartridge that'll do it w/o gut busting pressures.

However, I have never followed that advice......;)

Just dropped Barrel and Action off...... she will be reamed with JGS 1300-HF 6mm Dasher reamer, according to JGS 's specs 0.271 neck and 0.040" free bore. The Manson Dasher he had was at 0.140" freebore, and the BR was also another long throated rascal, IIRC something along the lines of 0.092" or maybe a bit longer.

Now just the wait of 10 months at $270.00 monthly payments .... LMAO.. yes I'm joking, actually looks like end of February, or a bit sooner.

I just went with the shortest throat / freebore (to accommodate the range of bullets I want to shoot), and let the rough edge drag between the case. Looking forward to her being completed.

Love the dasher and had a few wild cats based off the Dasher case over the years. I have 500 plus pieces of Dasher brass that I keep around for my 30 Saborcat.
