Choke tube question

Over the years I've done pretty well at the local turkey shoots held at my gun club. I shoot a 870 with a 28" barrel with a Carlson .640 extended choke tube. The distance is 25 yards or so maybe 30 max. The loads are low brass number 8 12 gauge. My question is how much tighter of a choke tube constriction can I go safely and effectively. And where can I buy one. I can't find anything under .640 for my 12 gauge 870

If you are going to be hunting coyotes with buckshot or large shot such as "T" shot, I'd caution you against going to more constriction. Your tube is far tighter than the customary full choke. If you constrict buckshot or larger sizes too much you run the risk of having a "trainwreck" as the charge goes through the choke. This isn't dangerous, but it can deform the shot to the point that it flies like a frisbee. I'd go with what you have.

But to answer your question, I'd check with the major tube manufacturers and see what shows on their websites.

Yeah, I've been to a few over the years.

I don't know of a choke tube manufacturer that makes any more constriction than you have now.

You could try calling the above folks at Trulock Chokes. I have found their techs rather accessible.
If they don't make a tighter choke they would be able to tell you why. I'd think you get to a point of diminishing returns as you get tighter. Even though the 'card shooting' with smaller shot is fairly common, some guy is going to mistakenly shoot heavier shot through it.
