Cimarron National Grasslands

Have any of y'all ever hunted there? I live in Kansas City, with VERY limited places to hunt. My father-in-law has some land around the Fort Scott area, so I was looking for a place to take a trip to in the fall (late Sept., Oct.) and was wondering if the hunting in the National Grasslands was any good?

Thanks,
AC

I remember reading on here a few months ago about the same inquiry. If I remember correctly several KS fellas said it was good hunting. Try Tuttle Creek Res. north of Manhattan, there's a lot of pub land around there especially look towards the north end around "Fancy Creek"

Have called lots of coyotes on the cimarron grass land.
100,000 acres of good coyote calling.
Mange might have thinned the population some but i'll bet there is still plunty.
Good luck

Dang, Cassidy...better leave home in the middle of the night, if you want to get across the state by sun-up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
I take it there isn't much to hunt around your in-laws @ Ft. Scott? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You said Fall, but here is another suggestion:
The 2007 WIHA atlas should come out in late August/early Sept....I admit, I don't know how much of that land is available in Eastern Kansas.
But, I know just in North-central Kansas it averages about 700,000 acres with 1/2-2/3 of those acres suitable for calling coyotes/bobcats. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
And if you're willing to get away from the roads aways, the critters are there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Between Nov-Jan it's mostly what I hunt. I hunt my "honey-holes" before/after for the most part. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I live 18 miles from CNG and ever year I buy 2 out of state license for the bird hunting and the coyote hunting.I hunt the Rolla area and didnt hunt qail this year as #s were down but coyotes were fair.I like this area as it is like fishing, I dont have to get permission
Boone

Fort Scott has ok hunting, the WIHA lands there are very small, so one set and your done...I can only make 4-5 sets a weekend, then I like to give them a few weeks. I'm ready to take a trip somewhere I've never been. Thanks for the tip on the WIHA atlas.

Another possibility in Eastern Ks would be Flint Hills Nat'l Wildlife Refuge (John Redmond Res). Also check out Marion Res. and any other state/fed res in Eastern Ks for that matter. I've waterfowled on nearly all of them and would bet money there's dogs to be shot around them. The FHNWR has a TON of flooded crop/grass areas that typically freezes up by mid Dec. Once that happens the waterfowling activity will be focused to the open waters and crop fields. For sure take a look at the area SE of Harford, KS.

I make it back there nearly every Thanksgiving, drop me a line and maybe we can hook up. I have access to about 50K acres private grassland within a couple 2 or 3 hours of KC. Can always use a tailgunner.
