Greg, Hopefully, you have gotten the lens cleaned by now...For future protection of the objective lens, you might consider taking the scope to a full line camera store and finding a UV filter that will screw into the objective end of the scope (they are made in various sizes) for protection if it is a high quality scope...
Most camera owners do this to protect their camera lens from damage and dirt... The UV filter is much cheaper to replace (usually about $20) than a $300-$1000 camera lens...
As stated in previous posts, the glass in most lens is pretty hard, but the coatings that allow good light transmission can be relatively fragile and that's where the care is really needed...
