Cloth Crow Decoys?

swift one

I was wondering, has any one tried using black pieces of cloth for crow decoys? You know, something similar to a "Texas Rag Decoy"? I am getting sick an tired of carrying around the big plastic decoys (gettin' lazy) and am looking for and alternative.

This is in addition to my origional post. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I have done some of my own research and found some collapsible ,two-sided decoys by Renzo. They look pretty impressive. Any one tried these crow decoys?

Have you tried an owl decoy. I used one this fall in a field where alot of crows kept gathering. It worked like a charm. I used my oly arms pcr3 to thin the flock. Over a 3 day period I shot 22 crows with 45gr jhp whitebox winchesters. That's an impressive explosion when you hit one just right, red mist and feathers! Keep using decoys it will improve your hunt. Try placing an owl decoy in a fence post or something like that where they can see it. good luck

last fall was my first crow hunting expereance and i loved it. my homemade e-caller worked great. i made a crows gathering cd i did'nt thing sounded that good but it worked like a charm. we have a split season here and the next one starts feb 1st. the caller works good in the morning and at sunset but during the day, not so good. yesterday i was looking around in crowbusters and i saw the owl thing. i bet that will work in the middle of the day. those foolish birds are as much fun to call as they are to shoot!

I have read the bit on crowbusters about the guy using the rimfire to shoot the crows out of a dead tree. How many of you guys have done that and in the above post how did you get your birds on the ground? I have called in birds but they will never "light"! Thanks for any tips you all would like to share, I hate stupid crows, I guess because they are so hard to kill!

swift one--I don't know if this will be of interest to you or not, but click on this link and check out the kites that Jackite, Inc. has. I have one of their Blue Jay kites. I have never flown it, but it looks like it might be something that could work for you. They have 20 foot poles, string, etc. that you could use to get your flying decoy up in the air. My Blue Jay has a 28" wingspan so it should be visible from quite a distance. I was going to use it out coyote hunting, but never tried it--too much messing around for me.

This link should take you to one of their kites that you can color yourself. They also have blackbird kites, that may work for your application as well.

crows like to take a nap in the afternoon. find out were there going and get there first. you mite pick one or two off with a rifle. i've got two with my 357 on the ground by stalking a field from the woods.
i'm counting down the days till crow season here in maine. 8 to go! my crows gathering cd along with my crow hand call are a killer combo. i get 4-6 a day only cause i'm still getting use to the leed. there actually flying faster than they look. i call it the bewitching hour. just before sunset they start flying by going to there favorite roost. i turn on the cd and hand call for around 30 seconds. i'll get 5 maybe 6 sets of crow come in before it's all over. sometimes i'll see a couple of birds and call, all of a sudden the whole flock will show up and i'll empty my 11-87. sometimes i can get them back after blasting them. those crazy birds are some fun to shoot. i'm gonna get me one of those owl decoy within the next few days and try it out.
happy hunting!

Used to make good decoys in the old days by using black nylons over a shaped coat hanger to look like a crow. Open up the hook and stick it in the ground. They worked very good, but decoys are available now that work better. To get them on the ground, I find an open wheat field, set one owl decoy on top of a distressed flat decoy that is spread out, and place 3 standing decoys not far away. Dig a small hole and place the Fox Pro in it and cover it with burlap. Several crows will always land and you can bust them with a rifle from as far away as you want to shoot or the field allows. This even works w/o a caller, just takes more time since the crows must make a visual on the set to respond. I can usually fool them about 4 times in a day before they wise up.
