Coarse coats!

Not to blow up another thread, I thought I’d post this up. One of the areas I hunt I get a high percentage of coyotes with very coarse fur. These coarse ones tend to really blow out their hides and get rubbed out earlier than the coyotes I kill with softer, fluffier hides. Kinda wondering if others see anything like this in their areas? Here’s 3 pics of coyotes I’m referring to. And honestly these are coyotes over 3 years I think and off the very same property.

I have found coyotes here have different 'kinds' of coats also. No idea why. Back in the day when I trapped, I don't ever remember any furbearer having a coat that was different from the rest but that was several decades ago :unsure: .

I did not. However, that coyote was probably the only time I thought it wasn’t worth it to shoot a coyote! I postholed through crusty 18” deep snow for 300 yards to setup. I shot that coyote at another 120 yards out. More postholing! Saw it wasn’t worth bringing home so dragged it another 40 yards to get to a ditch to toss it in them postholed my way back out! Talk about tired! Times like that you start questioning your sanity!

Erich, what kind of temps are you hunting in typically? Are all of those from around the same time of year?
 
They were all in Feb/Mar the two with the drilling were just north of the Mexican border(30 miles) and the fuzzy was a 100 miles south of the Canadian border

Thanks. That 3rd one looks pretty fluffy. Is that common that far south? I kinda thought those far south coyotes were generally pretty ugly?

Fuzzy looks like it’s blowing its winter hide out a bit.
 
These are prime hides from Northcentral WA(-0 to 32) and NM/Mex(25-70} border country.

They're both pretty

In NM I can start with warm gloves, heavy coat and long johns in the morning and be in a T-shirt by noon. In fact instead of longjohns I wear soft wind proof chaps as they are easier to get off than underwear.
 
They are pretty hides Erich. Looks to be a size difference as well! Lol.

Sound advice on the chaps vs longjohns too!
 
I have not necessarily seen a difference in fur between locations but, have noticed a change in fur over the years. The first coyote I got (probably mid 1990's western PA) was very light blonde with long soft thick fur. Fast forward ten years the fur was getting darker and more coarse. And yes the rubbing seamed to be more pronounced as the years went on. Don't know if it was more rubbing or the change in fur that made the rubbing more noticable.

Not necessary. Doesn’t really matter I guess. Topic was mostly for the sake of conversation. I was never a fur guy and always gave my coyotes to guys that are. I know they didn’t want those ratty looking ones in the pics I posted. I can’t say that I blame them!
