Cold Weather Clothing

Leaving next week for a hunt Kansas and cannot decide what clothing I need. Being from North Carolina we don't experience a lot of really cold weather. Curious if down vest or my trusty sherpa lined Carhart will be sufficient under a mid-weight hunting jacket. I usually wear bibs and insulated boots, but am a little unsure about the rest of the garb. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Layers. I hardly ever wear bibs here unless it's 15 or lower, like it has been the last week here. Under Armour(Cold Gear)Top and Bottom, Sweat Shirt, Lined Wool Shirt, and a jacket if needed. The last few days I've worn a balaclava just because of the wind chill. What part of the state are you hunting in? The west and north got a lot of snow this week and the temps are quite a bit lower than the south and east.

We will be hunting down around Sedan, about 100 miles east and south of Wichita. So I take it all this down stuff is not necessary?

Forecast for the week of Feb.10 is single digit lows and highs in the teens warming to 20's and 40's by the weekend. If your not accustomed to it single digits with a little wind and humidity can be cold. As Bail said layers are the key. First one close fitting, second loose fitting, outer wind resistant. I have down and use it some but mostly use a high quality base layer, and wool. I'd rather be a little too warm than freezing my tail off. Best of luck here! That's good country.

I hunted in minus 11 with windchill in the negative 20's with a longjohn top (wool), another lighter layer, vest, and a light jacket (no insulation) and was ok for 25 minutes after I stopped walking. I was wearing a fairly light pair of pants and bibs that were not too insulated. My boots are 200 gram with wool socks. If you walk a few hundred yards you will keep plenty warm. Most people overdress and start to sweat. Keeping your head warm is very important. I usually wear a warmer facemask with another hat on top of it.

That's within 80 miles of me. You can bring it but u probably won't need it. I make sets that don't go over 30 mins though and maybe walk a half mile in at most.

Guys thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. I checked the weather and you guys are correct based on the forecast I saw...warming toward the weekend with minimal chance of precipitation. Can hardly wait...really looking forward to it.

Don't forget out there it will be "dry cold" to you.

The first time I went hunting out west I took everything I could think of and most of it was not needed. I was surprised when I pulled up in Wyoming to stop for the night and everybody was putting on their winter coats and vests at the restaurant but I was in t-shirt and a open long sleeve shirt. They were used to it and it was normal for them while I on the other hand was used to much more humidity being from Kentucky.

Still it will be cold and windy and after 5-7 days it will start to effect you just like it does the residents.

Long johns are key when its really cold, and then layer accordingly....Its better to have to undress and throw the extra what ever in your bag than to be wishing you had brought more... Hot hands are pretty good too, and can be used for more than just you're feet and hands... Natural gear makes some good stuff that is pretty affordable....

Huh??

Thought about what you guys said about layering and I think I've got it. Insulated under garment (UA or the likes), sweatshirt, wool shirt and jacket. Thin socks, then wool socks. Good gloves and a polar fleece cap (we call them toboggans here) for the ears and we are good to go. Last question, if I forget something is there a Walmart in Sedan?

You can always take off extra clothes if You over did it, pack a few of those air activated hand Warmers just in case it gets too cold in the early mornings or late evening. You may be plenty warm walking out to set up....it's when Your sitting still waiting when the cold sets in!

Light or mid-weight long underwear, 1856 wind proof fleece, thin socks, heavier wool blend socks. Gloves, hat, facemask. Windproof material is worth it's weight in gold; lived all but the last 18 months in Ks. Sedan area is good country. Enjoy!

UnderArmour 4.0 top and bottom, Fleece pants and 1/4 zip pullover, White camo bibs and jacket, UnderArmour facemask (White or camo) I wear 2000 gram boots, and stay out all night long.

Starting with thin base layers is key for cold weather. Last time I was unsure about a temperature I was unfamiliar with on a trip deer hunting to ME I was more worried about over dressing and sweating because it would make it colder for the sit. If you have free time when you get there put on some clothes and just sit still outside the house for a while, you'll know within 30 minutes if that's enough clothes or not.
