I had a taste of the west this year and come heck or high water I'm gettin' back if I have to sale body parts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was wondering/hoping if any of you in the PM fam could give me some recomendations for some outfitters? I'd like to hunt the rifle season for elk. I say Colorado because unfortunately none of my draws came through. I'd really love to do Elk and antelope combination. Any advice and recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also up for any advice or support in the right direction of a do it yourself hunt. I have pretty much everything I need to do it myself I just need some guidance in the right direction. I have truck, gun, ATV, Tent, Trailer, No wife, and the time to get there!! I've wanted to harvest a bull badly and if an outfitter doesn't work out if any of you could point to a place to hunt that'd be cool too!! There Colorado elk hunts can be guaranteed (High fence) or wild animals on private property.

Colorado residents are allowed to hunt these private property if they get drawn in the "Ranching for Wildlife" draws for only the price of a regular resident elk tag. These areas are listed in the hunting regs at the back of each animal species hunt areas.

I know that residents wishing to hunt with Tri-State Outfitters in the past costs were $3000 for a cow and a lot more for a bull.

In the northern central units there are lots of left over tags because this area has cronic waste disease. It is pretty easy to find elk in that area of the state without a guide as well...just rough country.

Elk and antelope usually are not found in the same area as well as the hunting seasons don't run at the same time.(2008 dates)

Elk Rifle:
1st season Oct 11-15
2nd season Oct 18-26
3rd season Nov 1-7
4th season Nov 12-16

Antelope Rifle:
1st season Oct 4-10 or 11-17 in some areas

I guided for this outfit for 10 years because Jake runs a good camp. Better than any of the others I have been in. I don't guide anymore but like to see people get good hunts.

I think that anyone who really lives to hunt should go on a guided wilderness hunt at least once, No vehicles, no phones, no road hunters just hunting. They owe it to themselves. Your odds are increased drastically and better yet, all you have to do is hunt. Someone else does the cooking, washes dishes, makes the lunches, etc. You get to spend your time and energy chasing game. It's a hunt you'll never forget.

If you are looking for a combo hunt you might want to look into a Colorado 1st season elk hunt then run up to Wyoming and get in a self guided long weekend antelope hunt. The goat rifle season runs the Sept 25th-Oct 25. It requires a draw but we hunt does every year and bucks every other in the area we hunt. You don't need a guide for that just a BLM map and a good 300 yard rifle.

As stated, you are too late for the Wyoming draw. Not sure if you can still purchase a license in a General License Area (not limited quota) or not. You would have to call the Wyoming game and Fish. That having been said, if you are interested in a do it yourself hunt, I can certainly give you some guidance to put you into good quality elk country. I have killed 8 bulls in the last 9 years with a bow and 6 of those bulls came from a General License Area that I hunt when I dont draw my limited quota area. In the 32 years I have lived in Wyoming I have killed 25 Elk, all of them bulls. I would have no problem pointing you in the right direction. I have just the place in mind. Let me know if I can be of assistance. If your a bow hunter, I could probably actually show you some country since I take 3 weeks vacation every September to pursue Wapati in the high country. I am definetely an Elk-aholic.
 
VirginiaCoyote, I found out today that I didnt draw my CO antelope, so I'll be headed up to WYO for doe/fawn antelope again this year (Oct 4-6th or 3-5th depending on whether I get Monday or Friday off). PM me and I'll give you the low down. You're welcome to tag along if you can (car) camp it. It's a great tag for non-res if you don't mind not getting horns. Finding the animals is NOT a problem. Also, you don't need a 300 yard rifle...I use my muzzleloader, stalking on open prairie is FUN! You can then look around these dates for leftover bulls in N CO (check 1st rifle season oct 11-15) or Wyoming general tags. I can point you to some good areas in N CO but would never claim to gauruntee you that you'll see anything as far as elk.
