Colorado Hunters?

I just returned from my trip to CO. Wow!

One question? Those of you who hunt the eastern part of the state, Do you use the hubble telescope for a scope.? LOL If you dont, you could and should. Man, I drove up pikes peak (a bit touristy but still cool) I think I could see Toronto from up there. I saw, mule deer, pronghorn, 60" of snow and 0 coyotes during my stay.
What is the yote hunting like in the Colorado Springs area like? I may have to go back, so, the next trip will include some pleasure with business.

Anyways, just looking to hear from some guys or gals who have hunted the area around CO Springs.

Cheers.

Never hunted near Colorado Springs, but i am sure there are plenty of dogs around that area. That is the cool thing about Colorado, we have every type of terrain. You have farm fields in the east, snowy 14,000' peaks, sagebrush flats, and desert. I grew up in the western part of the state and it is mostly sage mulie country, plenty of dogs too.

Theres a coyote hunting mafia there in Co Springs, the godfathers name is Dawgkilla. He lurks around these boards most times.Might want to talk to him. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

There are a few guys that lurk around these boards, and given a little time, I'm sure they will show. I hunt the eastern plains also, just a little ways North of the Springs, and there are good numbers of coyotes to be hunted pretty much any where in the eastern plains of the state. There is some public lands in the S.E. corner of the state that are good calling grounds, and most land owners will let a guy hunt coyotes if you stop and ask. I am rarely turned down when I stop and ask to hunt new grounds. I'd bet, given some notice before your next trip, someone could plan on taking ya out, or give ya some direction to get into some calling.

There is a fair amount of public east and S.E. of Colorado Springs, most of which has coyotes on it. I find the coyotes on the plains to be easier to call in than the mountain coyotes. Perhaps its because there are more of them out there? Post again before you come down, and I can point you in a few directions.

By the way, for us Colorado guys, the State Trust Land Board is looking into leasing some of the larger state trust lands to outfitters, thereby kicking us off, unless we hire the outfitter...I think that stinks. I will have to call the State Land Board, my Representatives, and the Govs. office to express my displeasure. If you get a moment, please do the same. Public pressure is something ALL the politicos understand...
Fred

Hornet, that sucks!
Out here in Kalifornia were facing down a bill to ban dove hunting and a .10 per round ammo tax among other neat stuff.
God I love this state /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Dawgkilla sold his AR so he isnt the godfather anymore. The Schmidt boys are from there and they finish on or near the top in ST Francis every year.Get an hour or so away from COSPR and youll have no problem with most ranchers.Privete land seems to be best.Keep close contact with owner and you know how much theyre being pressured.Pinion Canyon is the only public land I hunt around here. Its good but military rules the roost. From prarie dogs to bull elk,its all here.

I am getting really tired of outfitters. They are also the ones that lobby for big game seasons to be set up the way they are currently. It was all about the outfitters getting to squeeze in their 4-5 day hunts. I have guided for an outfitter and it left a pretty sour taste in my mouth. Talk about a blood sport!!!!!!

LH .10cents a round TAX?? thats obscene. Leave it to the liberals to try something like that.

Barry, I've been saving my points to hunt deer on the Pinion Canyon site ( I have 8), and am thinking of going there for spring turkey.

It stinks the State Trust land board is thinking of auctioning the hunting rights to PUBLIC property to the high bidder. I wonder if the trustees are from Boulder??

K22, how the heck can they get away with leasing those lands to the outfitters or is this one of those "money talks" things. I think that is bogus to say the least. The outfitters, not all of them, seem to need more and more, more tags, more land, more money, on and on. I lost the privalage to hunting some private propery because of them, although I can't blame the farmers and ranchers for trying to get some more income from the land they own, BUT, that's a whole nother story isn't it. It doesn't surprise me that someone is pushing to tax ammo, as you may recall that there was a push to do that nation wide just a few years ago. Support NRA and any other group that will fight tooth and nail for us.

K22,keep applying. This year only 14 out of 30 hunters took their tag due to the uncertainty of manouviers might be going on there.Last I heard it was taking 10 or 11.Have you ever hunted there?Coyotes were a little off this year, but still worth going.Lots of ground to cover, never called the same spot twice.

Songdog, this does appear to be a 'money talks' situation. The article was written by Charlie Meyers in the 03/16/03 Denver Post. The Land Board might want to model it after the Ranching for Wildlife program. Gov. Owens appointed the people on the Land Board, so I think a call to the Govs office against this idea would be worthwhile.
Barry, I have never laid eyes on the Pinion Canyon site. I do almost all of my coyote hunting northeast of Denver. Do you have an opinion on how good the turkey hunting might be on that property? I've been going to Spanish Peaks for my fall bird for 7-8 years now and maybe once a year for coyotes (of which there are quite a few). Fred

K22,alot more turkey around spanish peaks.I've personally never seen a track down there.Doyou know Locohead in Denver?I hunted with him northeast of Den this winter.

I'm new to CO, just 4 weeks now. Living in the Peoples Republik of Boulder. For the time being, anyway. Need to get a little further E. of the front range, I think. Lotsa' coyotes here, though. Just can't shoot 'em.

K22, thanks for the heads up, I missed the article, don't get the paper. NASA, from Boulder, you could go north and west and get some good calling areas. I've never, but would like to, do some calling N.W. of Fort Collins, and out around Krimmling and Walden. There is alot of BLM, some state trust lands up there that just look awsom for calling. I'd suggest ya get yourself a Colo. Atlas map and a copy of the state trust lands brochure and check those areas out. Then after ya get some good areas scouted out, give me a call and I'll come up and hunt them with ya. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Songdog, I'm on it, lol. Last week I looked at an area E of COSPGS. This weekend I'm headed NW, like you said. The land trust areas, are they State or BLM land. (edit: Doh! Just reread your post) They are considered "public", right? Once I get settled, I need to go out and shake some hands. Including yours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

NASA, the state trust lands are held by the state and many of the lands have "special" hunting regs. to follow. For instance, some of the state lands only allow bow hunting, or only allow shotguns, or are only open for hunting on certain days of the week, etc. You can pick up one of the STL brochurs at most Wal-marts or the DOW office on Broadway for free, and go from there. I just mentioned the area N.W. of Fort Collins, 'cause every time I drive through there on my way to Wyo., I day dream of calling it. There is a STL that has 5760 acres just N.W. of Ted's Place up there that looks like good calling area. It can only be accessed by foot or horse back, but it is good looking calling country.

Dawgkilla sold his AR?? Jeez I was just out with him, his buddy Jeff, and Predator Paul in February. Well, he's got a new job, so maybe there's another AR in his future at some point.

State land here in CO is under the control of the person or entity that leases it from the state. The State Trust Land board works with the Division of Wildlife to open certain parcels of state land to public use related to wildlife at certain times of the year (usually Sept thru Feb or May). You can get a full listing of parcels from the state DOW website, if you root around in it enough (no easily found link). Lots of big and little plots scattered all over.

OK, got my STL brochure from a DoW warden. His advice, "get away from Boulder. At the sound of a gunshot, all the greenies dial 911". Good advice, I'm sure.
