Colt AR 7.62x39

I'm afraid I know what you guys are going to say but.....Can you shoot steel cased 7.62x39 ammo through a Colt AR? I was given a bunch of steel cased 7.62x39 ammo and it started me looking for an AK47. However, today I found a Colt AR in 7.62X39 and I loved it. But it kind of defeats the purpose if I shouldn't shoot steel cased ammo through it. Thanks for any input.

Greg.

With what kind of results?

Like computers, Garbage in Garbage out. None of them will be BR quality but 1.5 MOA should be doable with some of the offerings out there. Worse with others. Handloads can make it live and breath fire but that's not what most guys pursue with that cartridge.

I've got my first AR type 7.62 on order right now but it will be fed handloads from the get go. Your documented results should be very educational for all of us. If it's terrible you can always rebarrel to a Grendel variant.

I had a Colt Match Target Lightweight 7.62x39 15 - 20 years ago. With good ammo it was pretty accurate. I shot a small trailer full of steel case blasting ammo through with no problems. The only issue for that cartridge in the AR platform back then was getting quality magazines that were reliable. I'm guessing that has improved over the years?

I shoot wolf and brown bear through my Armalite 7.62x39 with no problem. What you'll need is some quality mags. I have some ASC mags that other than the 10 rounder don't work well however I'm now using a couple of D&H Tactical mags which seem to solve that problem.

And as well built as those Stoners are I doubt that you would lose more than a few fingers and hopefully not more than one eye when it blows up on you.

Ah. Just kidding. Shoot the crap out of it. Wont hurt a thing.

I have one with a YHM barrel. shoots white box red army ammo to around 2-2.5 inches at 100yds. handloads with 123g hornady SP Interlocks or 123g barnes TAC-X boattails shoot just over 1/2" for me. That's with me pulling the trigger!.

Even managed to drop a 10pt Kansas whitetail with a texas heartshot with the barnes bullet last year.
