Commercially loaded 8mm ammo?

I bought an M48 Mauser a while back and have read that current commercially loaded 8mm ammunition may not be safe in mausers other than K98's. Is it safe?

I'm not ready to start loading for another caliber.

Early 8MM's (1888) used a bullet of .318 diameter, called the Patrone 88.

The Germans redesigned it in 1905 and changed the diameter to .323 and smokeless powder, and they designated it "S-bore" or S Patrone.

Your M48 is just as strong as a K98, and uses the same ammo.

There are lots of Mauser made rifles, small ring, large ring, some made in Turkey, some in Sweeden. You can read for a month about Mausers.

8 × 57 IS
8 × 57 JS
8 × 57mm
8mm Mauser

These should all be the same round and safe in your M48.

8 x 57 I
8 x 57 IRS

These two are NOT the same round and will not work.

Our own 30-06 was redesigned from the original 30-03, the 03 Springfield, later the 03A3, and was inspired by a Mauser.

I hope this is the answer you were looking for.

I'm no expert!

I've got some surplus Yugoslav ammo from 1953 that I'm sure would be fine, but I'm sure it's corrosive and don't want to ride that train. Also, I know it's a bit large but I want to take a coyote with it and ofcourse that ammo is ball ammo, can't have that. Not finding a lot of factory ammo out there, but PPU makes some that I should be able to get from Cabela's. Any other recommendations?

Chupa,

I've shot a lot of that 1953 stuff, it's corrosive but, if you will get some Hoppies #9 and give it a good scrubbing right after you get through shooting it's really not a big problem. If your worried, use Hoppies blackpowder cleaner first. I remove and strip the bolt and rinse it in the sink with hot soapy water. Oil and put it back together.
