Comparing shotgun loads with KPY Shotshell Ballistics.

If you have 2 or 3 shotgun loads that you would like to see how they compare to each other let me know and I will give you the results from KPY Shotshell Ballistics.

I will need to know the shot size and type, shot charge weight and muzzle speed. For penetration wanted we can use .80" for dove and quail, 1.50" for big ducks and pheasants. 2.20" for small geese, 2.50" for big honkers and 3.70" for coyotes in the 20 to 35 pound range. KPY uses 20% gel so it is harder to penetrate into than the 10% gel that law enforcement uses.

Just for the heck of it below is the comparison of a 1300 fps, 1-1/2 oz lead BB coyote load to a 1300 fps 1-1/4 oz TSS #4 shot coyote load.

1300 fps, 1-1/2 oz lead BB load gets 3.70" of 20% gel penetration at 46.1 yards and has about 77 pellets per shell.
1300 fps, 1-1/4 oz TSS #4 shot load gets 3.70" of 20% gel penetration at 78.9 yards and has about 104 pellets per shell.

If you want to compare the same type of shot but in different sizes I can give you the speeds at 40 yards away, to show how fast shotgun pellets slow down. You don't gain much in performance by jacking the speed way up. Quite often you get better performance by going up in shot size than by going to faster pellet speeds.

1500 fps steel #4 shot gets 1.27" of gel penetration at 40 yards away and has 2.29 lbs of energy and is going 671 fps at 40 yards.
1400 fps steel #3 shot gets 1.42" of gel penetration at 40 yards away and has 2.87 lbs of energy and is going 672 fps at 40 yards.

My EDC (every day crow) load is 1-1/4 oz of #7 @1200 fps. Would be interested in comparisons to 6, 7-1/2 and 8 shot sizes at the same velocity. Thanks.

These are 1-1/4 oz lead loads at 1200 fps with speed, penetration and energy at 40 yards and pellet counts for 1-1/4 oz.

1-1/4 oz of 8 shot has about 513 pellets, at 40 yards gets .91" of penetration, has .75 lbs of energy and is going 564 fps.
1-1/4 oz of 7-1/2 shot has about 436 pellets, at 40 yards gets 1.06" of penetration, has .95 lbs of energy and is going 584 fps at 40 yards.
1-1/4 oz of 7 shot has about 374 pellets, at 40 yards gets 1.20" of penetration, has 1.17 lbs of energy and is going 603 fps at 40 yards.
1-1/4 oz of 6 shot has about 281 pellets, at 40 yards gets 1.50" of penetration, has 1.74 lbs of energy and is going 636 fps at 40 yards.

1600 fps 1-1/4 oz of 8 shot has about 513 pellets, at 40 yards it gets 1.18" of penetration, has 1.03 lbs of energy and is going 661 fps.

At 40 yards away the #8 shot that starts out 400 fps faster is only going 25 fps faster than the lead #6 shot that started out 400 fps slower. The recoil on a 1600 fps 1-1/4 oz load would have brutal recoil.

I shot a fair amount of lead #7 shot at Eurasian Collared Dove and it was very impressive at 35 to 50 yards away. It is to bad that no factory ammo comes in #7 shot or a #6-3/4 size shot. Size #6 to size #7-1/2 shot is a pretty big gap.

Very true!

In my late teens, I was asked to sight in a 12ga with 1oz slugs. I was totally unprepared for the recoil while shooting off the bench. It was way worse than my 270W.
