Would like your input on a lightweight upper for coyote hunting. I will be using a red dot so I need a flat top in a 16" barrel with an aluminum or carbon fiber float tube with gas block. (want it to be as light as I can)

Thanks in advance.

I recommend a Rock River Arms upper - I bought one last year just like what you described & it is GREAT!!! I bought mine from adcofirearms.com
They are located in Ohio

try model 1 sales, M&A parts or J&T distributing, they are all of quality on par with RRA, bushy, and DPMS, about the only difference is who makes they're barrels, RRA uses wilson, J&T uses shaw and model 1 uses harris, other than that they all buy parts and put them togather.

The only thing about the 16" is it will blow your ears off.

If you want an AR for under $500 your best bet is to buy a complete USED lower for $200 or less and a complete USED upper including bolt, carrier and charging handle, for under $300. Since the ind of the AWB AR sales, and their componants, has been strong and the market prices have gone up. The best I can do with a new lower and new kit is $540 plus shipping (or tax, if I buy it at a show +/-). That would be for a very basic USGI configuration.

I did not realize that my ears were gone? I carry nothing but 16" AR's for hunting and have shot thousands of rounds from them and find them no more objectionable than any of my 20" DCM or HBAR Match with flash suppressors. The 16" carries better, shoots as well if not better and points a whole lot better. The trick is keep the barrel clean, no flash suppressor, or break and match your ammo to the job, mine is a Winchester 55gr. soft point ahead of 25.5 grs. of H 335 and have had good results out to 350 yards and better. Check Olympic Arms, best buy for the buck with Rock River Arms running a close second. But having said that the weapon in my truck and the one that I use the most is my Bushmaster V-Match Commando, Mueller 2 x 7 scope using Colt 20 rd. mags. I have found the cheaper you go the more likely you are to tell everyone how lousy the AR's shoot, and when you find a used upper at a gun show it makes me wonder why the person has it for sale in the first place and how the head space is, would it just not shoot well, is it mixed and matched, how is the crown on the barrel is it chromed or not, the list goes on.

Yeah, I never really thought my OLY PCR 16 is that loud. It's just the heavy barrel with no flash hider. Outside without ear protection it doesn't ring me that bad. If I'm target/varmint shooting I wear muffs, but you can't do that when you're calling dogs. I can still hear the TV if sit real close, so how bad could it be? WHAT? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a OLY SUM 16 and it's a little heavy to carry all day, but I just ordered a Rock River EOP upper and am going to install an Olympic 16" full heavy barrel on it with a Bushmaster free float handguard and a 2X7 Mueller on it and six position stock, it should be just the ticket when on my dirt bike. Or for all day carry.
