Coon calling gun options

Duckhunter what bullet did you use in your mag? I have had pretty good luck with the 30 gr. TnT load that Federal puts out. I have a hornet also but have neaver shot a coon with it.

Remington and Hornady, I think both were the 30gr variety. I think our biggest problem when trying it was my partners red dot scope. A 5 moa red dot is not precise enough in low light conditions for taking coon consistently. Seems like he ended up shooting center mass and it just didn't finish the deal. I wish we would've given it a go with a low power scope. The velocity seems very close to our .223 loads and it would be much easier to buy .22 mag ammo.

How many grains of Blue Dot are you using to get to the 2500 fps mark. I'm looking for something fur friendly that will still dump them in their tracks. I was considering the 17 fireball but this may be better yet, how is it as far as noise. That was my concern with the fireball, I don't want something too loud. I previously used 22 mags and 17 hmr for calling coon, both worked fine but neither was a drt killer, and that is kinda what I'm looking for.

We are using 10 to 11 grains. And there is no question, they drop in there tracks. Fur damage is minimal, very small entrance with an exit in one out of ten and even then its tiny. Sound wise, its considerably quieter than a .223 pushing 3000fps but its still loud. I'm not real familiar with the Fireball but a .17 HMR runs in the same velocity category as our reduced rounds I've just never had the opportunity to try one on coon. The bullet weight would be considerably less leading me to believe they might be a little light. Just don't know.
