coon hounds, what breed?

I can offer alittle insight, that may help you decide what you want for a dog.I run 3 Walkers, and a black and tan on cats and they range miles, when they hit a track you have to "go to the tree to get them back"I run 2 cowdogs on yotes,my old heeler ran coons when I was in MN,and he would run silent, and catch on the ground,or put up close to the tree.I also run two catahoullas, they will run a yote on dry ground, and catch or bay,but they are mstly decoy dogs,(This may upset some ,but catahoullas are another cur)And two leopards, they alos will run a track on dry ground ,the leopards will voice alittle more than the catahoullas, they only bark when they have game caught.MY HOUNDS LIVE IN A KENNEL WHEN NOT HUNTING,BUT THE CATAHOULLAS AND LEOPARDS ARE LOOSE IN THE YARD ALL THE TIME.THEY SEEM TO BE SMARTER DOGS OVER ALL.AND CATCH LOTS OF GAME.

This is like the old which is better, ford or chevy , the only answer is what suits you. I like walkers and blueticks . but I have also liked plotts, english , black and tan , never hunted much with a redbone so cant say bout them try to start with a broke or simi broke dog . Start by going with some of the hunters in the area and see what their dogs do or dont do, form your own opionion and go from there you can also try coondawgs.com go to the classified in that section and look at some of the dogs for sale look at every thing and take into concederation that if the dog is that good WHY ARE THEY SELLING IT JMO . if you buy a pup it is a lot of fun to watch them come into their own and become a coon dawg . good luck

One of the best pieces of advice I've seen yet. It sad to say that the ## of "started dogs" that are for sale just plain suck and should be culled.

Do yourself a big favor and buy one that already hunts! Save your money for a few months and buy a dog that is broke and ready to go...

The price to break a hound is less then buying one that knows what he's doing, also you'll have a ton more fun hunting then training and hoping.

The list of "not to do's" with a hound is a mile long, and one wrong push of the tritronics can ruin a dog for good.

Get w/ a guy that has one for sale in your area and go hunting with him SEVERAL times before you buy.

You can fall in love w/ a 2yr old just as much as you can a pup you raised.

I've just seen too many guys ruin dogs that may have made it by not having patients, running off game, not coming when called, you name it and you can get mad about it.

Hounding is an awesome sport, but takes allot of patients, hard work, time, and money. However, you can eliminate several of those factors. Simply buying a dog that is already trained.

I agree will the last few post,A new hunter should start with a started dog.You will have much more fun,and can learn alot from the dog.

i have something to say too.. i have hunted for years with my stepfather...since i was about 13.. im 31 now.. never have i owned a coonhound(i just took his..hahaha) but after sitting shotgun for so long with him i could distinquish the dogs personalities and how they hunted.. i found myself favoring certain dogs hunting styles. what im trying to say is this.. dont rush into buying the first dog you hunt with.. ask to tag along for awhile with different guys.. watching the way different dogs hunt..like they said above, certain dogs will hunt wide and long, some will just go in and cover a small track of land and come back to the truck, some hunt better alone, some hunt better packed up but if you take your time and find the dog that fits your hunting style or hunts the way you like then you wont have any doubts about purchasing him..or her...
