Anybody know anything about the train trips from the border down to and through the Copper Canyon?
I am looking at a Tauck tour but are others better or just as good and cheaper?
Also what time of year? I am thinking: late Fall, Winter, or early Spring. Cold is OK but hot is not.

Flown over it a bunch, Jack, taking guys fishing at El Fuerte, Sinoloa....Talked to some guys that took the train back through Copper Canyon & they enjoyed it, but said not in the summer time.

I think the air conditioning is your lowered window then. Maybe they updated.

There are several tour companies that offer train tours through the Copper Canyon. Don't waste your money. Drive down to Chihuahua, buy your own train tickets, Get off at creel, stay in a log cabin at the KOA there. Take a tour of the Toumahara indian reservation. Then get back on the train and get off again at Batopelias and spend the night there in the faboulous cliff hanging hotel. Then back on the train and get off at Los Mochis ( a 16th century city.) Great hotels there. Take a river rafting trip or an ecological trip on the Rio Fuerte river. Then take the train back to Chihuahua and go back home. You can make arrangements to leave your car in a safe place at a hotel in Chihuahua or just drive on into Creel and leave it at the KOA.

The Copper Canyon is a great place. It's seven times bigger than the grand canyon, Deeper, longer, higher and there are seven interconnected canyons. Do a Google search about the Copper canyon and get educated before your trip.

Oh be careful and be sure you get your tickets for the daytime trip. Otherwise you will see nothing but darkness.

Today I found a trip that looks good. Brendan has a 9 day rail trip from Phoenix to the Sea of Cortez and then through the canyon, ending back in Phoenix. It's a lot less hassle to cross the border on a train than through an international airline terminal. My worries are that it is a bit on the cheap and does not include drinks or wine with meals.

Just noticed the Copper Canyon question. We went through there in 2000. Used Columbus Travel, which is now changed to Canyon Travel formerly Columbus. The trip we took that Sept. ended up being just two of us for most of the trip. They use the train and sent us from place to place where we met a new guide. Was a great trip, but afterwards found out about the state dept warnings from a guy who worked for Cargill and the mexicans supplied him with an armed guard.

We used a wilderness lodge at one stay that included armed guys at night! Good trip, low key. Contact me if you are interested and have more questions
