Copperhead!

I had a baby one strike my boot last bow season. it was about 6" long. it got away before I could strike back though. I really been thinking about getting some snake boots for this bow season.

Hey GC, that's one nice revolver for sure.

Were you wearing regular boots or snake boots?

Not long ago I got some snake boots after months of doing reviews. I ended up with Chippewa. I almost got on a copperhead behind the barn last summer. Man it was close, came right at me. My son just about stepped on one inside the barn about a week later and did actually step on one at the farm gate early one fall three or four years back.. That ordeal, plus the fact that a close neighbor killed 7 or 8 in his yard last summer, prompted both my son and me to get snake boots. My son has already killed one not far from his house this summer.

Here's my snake medicine - Kimber 45 ACP with shot shells. It's pure death on snakes.

Regular 9" boots... I was out on some conservation ground checking some state food plots thinking ahead to bow season. Didn't have any intention of getting too far off the road, just doing some quick poking around. I stepped off the road a couple feet looking across a food plot because I thought I saw a deer on the far side and felt a "thump" on the toe of my boot right at the leather and sole junction. I looked down as I stepped back and this 18" - 20" copperhead was in the "S" curve position. As I moved back he moved forward... that was a mistake.

My brother killed two on his son's farm last week they ran out while bush hogging one was 35" the other 30"..GC I have that same gun model 63 with 4" barrel bought new a looooong time ago............Trapperdoc

Holy Crap Gary! Glad you're OK. I had a rattlesnake hit my boot once when deer hunting on a warm day. Scary, ain't it?

Yeah, I wouldn't want to repete the experience. There was a dude from the St. Louis area staying in a state park in the SE Ozarks earlier this summer when he and his kids came across a copperhead on a hiking trail. For some reason this guy decided to pick it up to show his kids and the copperhead bit him two or three times. He died...

Copperheads can cause more damage than a lot of people think. Death, even though it's pretty rare, is only part of it. Loss of use or partial use of a limb is another thing to consider, as well as excruciating pain. Then there's the doctor bills which can about bankrupt someone.

I haven't seen any copperheads this summer, but I know they are about where I tread. Two summers ago I killed 7.

Nearest neighbor is about a mile away down a back road.
He said he killed 13 last week that were real close to his house.
I haven't seen a single one this year.

My nephew lives in West Virginia . Said they are really thick this year compared to most years . He had killed 6 so far this summer on his property when I talked to him last week . Says the locals are seeing a lot too .

Where are you guys at in MO? We are working north of rolla around creeks and I haven't noticed any, but of they're known to be thick there I'll keep a keen eye out

Missouri has five venomous snakes. The Copperhead, Timber Rattlesnake, Cottonmouth Moccasin, Western Pygmy Rattlesnake and Massasauga Rattlesnake. The Copperhead, Timber Rattler and Cottonmouth are by far the most common and could be found pretty much statewide so keeping an eye out is probably just a good idea. If you are working outside around brushy areas Missouri raises some record size ticks and chiggers and Lyme Disease is no joke so Permanone tick spray is an easy way to stay itch free. My wife has a bad case of poison ivy right now, watch out for "leaves of three." Enjoy your time in Missouri, be safe.
