My son dabbles in taxidermy some, has done some really nice deer, and a full-size coyote mount for me and a pedistal mount, as well as a full-size red fox.
I can vouch for what Tony just said - after the costs of all the supplies, a taxidermist doesn't clear much money, especially given the long hours they spend on each animal. My son will stay up all night when doing a deer, and that's after he has previously either tanned or preserved the hide and got everything ready to go. Then, he has to keep check on it during the drying time, and then touch up paint later. It's a lengthy process.
