I have good memories of catching and playing with water snakes as a kid. Can't see anything wrong with that! No reason to teach kids to be afraid of ALL snakes, just respectful of those that deserve it. My kids know not to mess with any critter until I've identified it as safe. If I can't ID it 100%, we just leave it alone. Pretty simple, and no unneccessary chances taken.
