It's a toss up!
There's a few things you can do to get a lower tone. A longer sound chamber, a "softer" sound chamber such as wood compared to acrylic or horn, or a thicker reed.

I've only called in 3. Two on a jack-rabbit sound using a (Tally-HO), 1-on a cottin-tail sound using a(Carlton's Predator Call). IMO, if their in the mood; hungry, curious, territorial ect. They'll check out many sounds. In Iowa coyote's hate, racoons and cats. Last winter, I came across 3-coon killed by yotes. They didn't eat them. A farmer friend, told me they come up in his yard, and killed his neighbors tom-cat. They then ran off with him.

Jacks are coarser and more gravelly, grittier sounding. Cottontails are softer and higher pitched.

What GC said. I prefer a higher pitched sound. I've tried differnet ones (predator-distress calls)on our German shepard. He'll always come running to the higher-pitched scream, no matter how many times I do my calls in the house.

You can associate the sounds a coyote comes to, to fishing. Sometimes worms work, sometimes power bait works. Just depends on the animal and that particular day. That is also shown in some of the predator hunting videos. The hunter will play a certain sound on his electronic caller or mouth call and nothing happens. So he decides to switch sounds to see what happens and he is stampeded by animals. So to answer your question, both are better. Just depends on the day, the animals and many other factors of animal behavior that we may never understand.

As a matter of information, the thicker reeds produce a higher sound. (Assuming reeds are the same length). Being thicker makes it vibrate faster. Also, the best jack sounds seem to be produced by a double reed. Tends to be more raspy.

Hope that helps a little. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Amen! I honestly dont think they can tell the difference. Food is food. Sometimes they want Mexican and sometimes they want Italian.

Hmmmmmmmm,
Cottontial vs. Jackrabbit, I think the Jackrabbit would win. The Jackrabbit has a size advantage over the cottontail and I am sure his reach is much greater. I say the fight would go 1 round and the Jackrabbit would hop out of there wearing the belt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I agree with what was said, any distress will work. I really dont think they sit there and say "do you feel like cottontail tonight hunny, me niether lets wait for a Jackrabbit". Unless they have been educated on a particular sound.

Take it easy
