Cougar call

I have the instruction tape almost completed now. I am awaiting the nod from BobR concerning the "whistle" sound I sent him. Bob is the cougar man, shucks I'm just the call maker here. I have only called one cougar in my entire life, but I hope to change that if my health will let me.

Robert J,
Be very careful around BobR, he will talk your leg off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good grief. I must be sick! The likelihood of me targeting a cougar are practically non-existent, but I still gotta have one of them there cougar calls! Rich, put me down for one too. Now what's that phone number for people who buy too many calls? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rich Cronk, Thats great /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif since I'm already missing a leg /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif but hey if Bob needs one to chew I have an exta one around here somewheres /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Rich, The kit wave sounds good to me. Rich, I have heard the kitten sounds several times in the wild, and I have it on video twice. I also have it on my WT caller. All these sounds are different, similar, but different. On the video I sent you, one of the kittens makes three whistles in a couple minutes time. If you listen closely, they are all different. The pitch of the call is the important thing, and there is not perfect sound that you have to make.
Robertjay, I will give you a call, but I do not live in Walla Walla. We live in the mountains east of Walla Walla.

Rich, In August 2001, I was riding my Honda on a logging road about 4 miles from our house. When I went around a bend in the road, I saw what I thought to be a bobcat eating something in the road fifty yards ahead. But when the cat ran up off the road, I saw it had a 12 to 14 inch tail. Then I knew it was a cougar kitten and I figured there was a den nearby, probably uphill where the cat had ran. I went back the next evening with my camcorder, hoping to see the cat again and get it on video. I did not see the cat, but in the road was the intestines and part of an ear from a snowshoe rabbit. I could also see the female's and kittens tracks in the road. While I was videoing this, I heard one whistle call. I started imitating that call, and the kittens started answering me.
I went back the next day with my son. That day, there were grouse feathers all over the road, and I was able to get the kittens to talk to me again. Now that I have seen the video, I know what was going on back then. The female was bringing food and calling the kittens down to the road.
If I had know what sound the female used to call her kittens back then, I probably could have hidden and called them down for a video. we never went up and looked for that den, and a couple of days later, they were gone, probably moved to another den.
Last year, I was following a cougar track in the snow on another logging road. I found where the female had called two cubs down to the road and they left following her. She was probably taking them to a fresh kill. The cub's tracks were almost as big as the female's tracks.
This new call will be funafter we learn how to use it.

Bob,
I need to talk to you. Please E mail your phone number to me. I had that number once, but I guess I lost it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here is a photo of the new Cronk "Cougar" call. I am ready to start taking orders now. The call will come with an extra reed and an instruction cassette which explains how to make the sounds and when to use them. I have decided to set a price of 30.00 each for these new calls. There will be a 5.00 postage and handling fee on each order. There will be a few days wait between the time that I receive payment and the day that I get the call made and tuned for you. I make all of my calls one at a time in my small shop. As far as I know, this is very first hand call ever developed that reproduces realistic cougar vocalizations.

Make one for me, the check is on the way. Maybe BobR can give me some pointers. Bob I have your phone number and will give you a call soon. Sidewinder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rich, The sounds you are making are not too bad for an old coyote hunter, but I think I can show you some improvement after I have my call a few days.
I can hardly wait until I can see what my dog thinks about this call. Ten days ago, he had a face to face encounter with a bobcat. We were hunting elk sheds, and Buddy caught a bobcat asleep in its den. By the time I got to him, he had been slapped a few times, and his head was all bloody. but he was still trying to grab that cat. He knows first hand what a pissed off cat sounds like.

Bob,
There is no doubt in my mind about that, but then I was not raised in a cave by a momma cougar like you were.:)

Rich,

There have been alot of new call ideas from builders on this site, in the past few months. This new call is, by far, the most creative I've seen.

I've been waiting to see and hear the call. I really like the sound of it!

Great job...Tony

Rich, I scanned this photo from the book that goes with the video. These are the two remaining cubs, both males, that made the high pitched calls in the video. They are 8 1/2 months old and weigh about 65 pounds. The mother is on the ground trying to call the other dead cub that was killed by the big tom. These are pretty big cats, but they still have high pitched squeaky voices.

Rich, I got the call today. I have never received a call from you that I was not very pleased with, but you have outdone yourself this time. I am also lucky I still have the call. I came home at lunch to check the mail, and I took the call out and sat on the patio to try it out. The call spooked our horses, and one of them ran into a fence.
I laid the call on the patio table to go see if the horse was okay. When I got back, Buddy was laying the yard chewing on my new call. He did not hurt the call, but he destroyed the reed. I put in the spare reed. I am going to take the dogs and go up the mountain this evening to play with the call.
I bought a microphone for my computer todau.
Bob

BobR,
Be sure to tell Dee where you are headed. If a cougar gets you it will be easier for the search team to find the terrible scene of the attack.

I will send you out some reed material. Use the reed you still have for a pattern and cut out a few exras. A decent pair of scissors will do the job nicely. The reed material is .010 Mylar. One last tip, don't blow that call around horses because it will spook the heck out of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

your new call had my cats interested! i turned up the volume on the computer and played the wav's. one came in and looked at the other like, "what in the heck are you doin'?" then they chased one another around the house for a bit. maybe you could mass market those babies in wisconsin. cat season's open all year there too! if it walks like a cat and talks like a cat, it's gotta be a cronk cougar call!
