yes ther are cougars in w.n.y . i live in the finger lakes area and people see them all the time. i saw cats on at least 1/2 dozen occassions this year, not bobcats, cougars

i have live and hunted in central new york all my life and have never seen cougars,, although i remember hearing on the news sightings of large cats in the whine country, (finger lakes region)and i have have had the luck to see bobcat and lnyx, is that what you are refering to? and if not were are they migrating from? idaho? lmao,,come on guys cougars arent really here,,is there any documetion of these sightings?the new york state department of consevations says the cougars (extirpated) from the vast new york woodlands, and what eversightings that have been reported are rare and they think from people who have them as pets and turned them loose.go to www.dec.state.ny.us/

You are right about cougars being extirpated from NY. However, Lynx ? No not likely either. Eighty lynx were introduced in the adirondacks back in 1990s but they have not been seen or heard from in NY. Most of the lynx have dispersed into other states. As 1999 there has been no evidence of a lynx population in NY.

Most cougars sightings are just cats and bobcats. If a cougar was sighted then it most likely was a pet that was realeased.

man the lifeboat, give me a break. dec released cougars in wheeler( a pair) cameron( a pair). a black bear was killed last year in cohocton( dec said a cougar did it . one lives on the property adjacent to my sister's place. the dec warned everyone last year that they are here. how do you explain grown deer (carcasses) almost twenty feet up in a tree. i know the difference between a lynx, bobcat, and a cougar. by the way, better add some life jackets to your boat cuz they released timber wolves too!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

To see lions 1/2 doz times in a year is pretty darn good. I've lived in lion country all my life and I can't say that  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I highly doubt that NYSDEC released wolves in NY. It would have been all over the news. Do you live next to a Zoo?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This isnt the first I heard DEC released wolves and cats, I have heard that before from other sources. One couger has been seen several times in this area over the last 3 years. I might at by some fairly prominent people, ie. police chief, farmers and residents. One police officer was within 25 yards of a cat and he wasnt happy about it. I dont know where the cat came from, pet, or whatever but I really dont want one around my neck of the woods, and will change it if given the chance.
