Today I came across this story on the web.
I was shocked!
It is about Cynthia Dusel-Bacon, a corageous geologist whom I have spoken with but never met personally.
I had no idea of the stuggle she has endured.
She was mauled by a black bear and lost both arms.
She has thrived, and excelled, in her professional and family life in spite of her disabilities.
Her story is inspiring.
It also contains vital lessons for those of us who, like her, love the wild outdoors.

......For two summers this system worked perfectly.

pretty tough lady with a great outlook on life.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

20 free years...

puts some of our meager complaints in perspective...

Project chief probably thinks that a gun adds more danger than safety to a household as well. My home is a very dangerous place then... for criminals!

What a tough lady, great attitude and outlook.

It's been a hard fast rule of mine for sometime to not go into the woods unarmed. But then we all know Black bears will run as soon as they see you right?

About thirty years ago I went for a walk up into an area we hunted. As I came to a bend in the old logging road a coyote came running right by me. I thought that was pretty strange. As I rounded the corner the next thing I see is a new bear cub 25 feet ahead at the edge the road and it starts crying. Mom comes up out of the brush doing the quick step and gives me one of those looks that makes the hair stand up on your neck. She made a noise that I'll never forget. Baby runs to Mom and they slowly walk into the brush much to my relief. That was the last time I ever went into the woods unarmed.
