Ok this question might sound a little silly, but I got some red fox pee for cover scent. What is this tuff supposed to smell like? The stuff I bought kinda smells like our spetic when it rains alot and backs up a little bit. Just wondering if thats the right kind of smell for the fox P. I mean Ive skinned quite a few fox and they didnt smell much like this stuff. What other scents would work good for cover scent?

I use a little rabbit urine mixed with fox pee for misting and putting a bit on my boots.......can't describe fox pee cause it's pretty undescribable, if you get some fresh from a distributor then you'll know..........

don't do what i did one year. i dropped a bottle of skunk scent in my car. needless, to say this car went to auction. lol

Kevin, Fox Pee smells just like its supposed to, like the fox you have been skinning.

Souds like you might have gotten a rancid batch. Bottled urine does go bad eventually.

It smells pretty nasty to start with. It's hard to tell when good pee goes bad. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Man, aint that the truth! I did use fox urine for a long time, then I stopped. Stopping the use of said "stinky stuff" never effected my hunting one bit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hard to tell by the odor alone. If you really want to be sure, spoiled fox urine taste a little like road killed skunk.Seriously though, when I did a lot of trapping, I'd buy urine by the gallon.Pure red fox urine smells like a combination of red fox gland scent and ammonia. The older the urine gets the stronger the ammonia smell becomes. From a trapping perspective, urines that I held over till the following year were just as effective on fox and yotes as the fresh stuff. If the urine actually has a spoiled smell, quite likely it was contaminated in the collection pens with bits of food dropping into the collection trays. If the trays arent cleaned regularly, the urine will run over spoiled food and will absorb some of the smells.Pure unadulterated urin from meat fed red foxes is primo, and usually commands the best prices.Stay away from the mass produced cover scent blends, and buy it in bulk from a reputable trapping supply company. If you really want to boost the covering/attraction capabilities of the urine, try adding 1 oz of pure red fox gland lure to a quart of urine.Really boosts that foxy smell.
