Coyote and Prairie Dog Rifle

You will be happy with either one I am sure. I love the .223 caliber. And with practice a .223 can get you out there a long ways, it will be a great choice.

It is a little big for a dedicated pdog/yote rifle, but it will let you reach out and touch them for sure. With a good muzzle device, like the custom made one I have in the picture, I can see my hits....... and misses /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Looking at a Rock River heavy match with a .223 wylde chamber as the heart of my new rifle. Anybody have any experience with that Wylde chamber? Is it all it's cracked up to be?
 
The Wylde chamber is designed for single loading of the 80-90 gr bullets for long range, 600-1000 yard, shooting. If you will be shooting loads from the magazine you do not want it. It has a very long throat that is way too long for magazine length rounds.

Some 223 chambers...

A SAAMI chamber is normally about 2.410";

The "Wylde Chamber" (for competition-use AR-15 pioneer Bill Wylde) is 2.445";

The "AMU Chamber" (for U.S. Army competition team) is 2.500". There are others, but these are the most popular among competition rifle builders.

A NATO chamber is normally about 2.550".

So you can see that the Wylde chamber is a little longer than the SAAMI, but much shorter that the NATO chamber.

A lot of guys shoot AR's with the NATO chamber with no ill effects, even when shooting the shorter 55 and 60, and 69 grain rounds.

The Wylde chamber is 30 thousandths longer than the SAAMI, and is considered to be the best of the compromise chambers.

I was talking about throat length or freebore. The Wylde is definitely the longest at .0619". The 5.56 NATO chamber has .0566" freebore. The SAAMI 223 only .025". If you want to load ammo to fit in the magazine and be close to the lands the 223 is the best choice. If you are single loading 80-90gr bulets the Wylde is the best choice.

I have all the chamber prints here in front of me, plus a lot of custom ones and I have yet to see one with more freebore than the Wylde. The long freebore on the Wylde is not a bad thing it is just for a specific purpose and should not be used otherwise.

I do know that that many AR builders consider the Wylde chamber to be the best all around chamber.

There is so much disinformation going around on the internet about the various 223 chamberings I have almost given up on putting the actuall numbers out there.

But not quite. And although I may regret it, I will fax the actuall chamber prints to anyone who wants to see the true numbers. Give me your fax number and I will send the 3 prints.
