Coyote attacked lamb, can we eat the lamb?

The coyote did damage to the hamstring and back area. My wife and father-in-law have already hung the lamb (field dressed and all) for 2 days and now are going to butcher it. They were going to just use it as dog food but it looks like there is quite a bit of good meat there still.

Can we eat it? Is there any chance the coyote transfering something bad into the lamb via the attack?

Cut out the area that is damaged and don't worry about the meat being bad. Its just like if you had shot it. Good luck.........Joe...........
 
If the "coyote" did the damage "back there" it might have been a domestic dog instead. Have you verified? Sounds like an inexperienced killer anyway. A lamb should be an easy and quick kill for a big yote. Throat or head.

Anyway. If an animal is pulled down from the rear then it often has experienced extreme stress from being killed by inches rather than all at once.

The meat might taste aweful.

Then again it might be really good.

Hard to tell.

I know people that have never shot a deer but eat a lot of venison. They keep an eye out for fresh road kill on cold days and take it home and process immediately.

As I sit here eating roadkill elk jerky, I say try some of it. Personally, mutton is low on my best meat list anyway.
