Coyote bullet for 223

Are 50 grain hollow points ok for coyotes or should I be shooting a bullet that holds together better like a soft point or something? I was wondering if penetration might be an issue for a light hollow point.

Can you shoot a coyote in the front of the chest or do they need to be somewhat broadside?

If your going to try and keep the hide shoot something that will stay in side.50 grain hollow points are OK but a "Varmint" bullet would be better Slow them down a bit.

You Can shoot them in the chest "BUT" that makes for a very small target. If your off to either side your in to the shoulder and that won't kill one. If your a bit high you hit the neck witch is a VERY poor kill spot. And a smidgen low well you know you miss...

I use a 50 grain VMax and have had no issues with a straight on chest shot. If I have looking one at me I just aim for his nose.

I love the head on chest shots on a called coyote, very little pelt damage. In fact that is my favorite shot. usually on a called coyote that is a relatively close shot as well. I have really been happy with Hornady's 60 grain soft points that I have used the last couple of years. Before that I was shooting 55 grain VMax and had a couple of splashes on shoulders.

50 to 60 grain Hornady VMAX has been the best .223 round I have found. You will have to experiment a bit with diff bullet weights and load to see what your gun likes best but they have done great for me. I prefer the .60g and my AR likes them.

+1
I use the 50 grain VMax for just about all my predator hunting and it works just fine.

My AR also loves 60 gr. vmax

Very good. I will look and see who has these already loaded to sell. Hornady would be one I would guess....

I know that front on shot isn't a good one, but the only shot I have ever had at a coyote was front on and it was looking right at me. I wondered when it got away if hit it wrong if the bullet didn't do the job. Found a drop of blood and that was it.

i see your in akron !! gander has the vmaxes on sale till the 28th !! if you can find em !!! the one in twinsburg i think only orders 1 box a year cause i cant never find em ... dicks also carrys them !! the one off howe ave. had em about a month ago !! good luck ...

Also very pleased with the hornady 50gr V-max and a stiff load of w-748 in my 223 , very accurate in my savage.

I looked at them at the Howe Rd. Dicks and all they had were the Hornady Superformance which is 200fps faster than the standard v-max . Actually the only difference is they are 3 grains lighter and $25.00 . You can find them alot cheaper than that , my gun shoots the v-maz 55grain really good . I usually buy mine from Ohio Outdoor Sports in Canton when I am down that way , they are only $19.99. The one coyote I shot with them was a slightly quartering away shot right in the boiler room . It passed all the way through at 100yds and the coyote still ran another 100yds . Hit nothing but some ribs , but surprised the bullet didnt expand and do a little more damage .

If he's at 300 yards I do that too, drops into the chest/throat.

Closer up, it can end up with a lower jaw blown off and a cripple running away.

Frontal shot, base of the throat/junction with chest piles 'em up.

I was looking at the cross section of the vmax, they are essentially a hollow point with a plastic tip inserted into the hollow spot correct? Or do they have thicker or bonded jackets? Does that design make the bullet hold together better on impact, and create good penetration when needed?

Yeah I am Always impressed in gander mountains ability to not have what I am looking for. Either I am very mainstream and want the same things everyone wants or I am the oddball that always wants something no one carries.

Yoteless:

Read these posts and cannot tell if you reload or not....

if you do reload, there are lots of bullets out there that work well in the .223:

40 gr Sierra HP, 45 gr. Speer SP, 50 gr. and 60 gr. Sierra SP and HP (try the thinner jacketed Blitz (i.e. velocities below 3500 FPS), Speer 52 gr. HP, Hornady 50 gr and 55 gr. SX/SP.

Some/Most of these bullets are available in factory ammunition.

Happy Hunting!

Not a reloader the way I read it.

Black Hills has some good ammo. 52gr MHPs and 50 and 60 Vmax. Proly some others too.
