Coyote bullet for 223

I have a limited amount of reloading equipment but honestly don't have time to fool with it right now. Stuck a reload into my AR and it jammed in the chamber. So obviously I would have to do something different.

I will look into a couple of these and try them at the range. Seems like vmax is a popular choice. I will grab a couple of different weights.

A 50 grain hollow point in the chest is a great shot. If you shot one in the chest and it ran off I would guess you actually shot it in the shoulder. A chest shot is great for saving fur. Most of the time the bullet ends up inside and there is no exit.

Will a vmax bullet "shoulder splatter" on a coyote? Looks like vmax is a great bullet as long as I avoid the shoulder. But I am guessing that any bullet that will deal with punching through the shoulder will pass through the animal on a "proper" hit will not be as effective either.

I shot a duiker in Africa with a 30-06 165 grn nosler partition and it ran further than a kudu did with the same bullet. It was like hitting it with a field tipped arrow, there was so little damage.

Funny how smaller animals can be harder to kill than bigger ones sometimes.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll see about some vmax bullets. Either way I am thinking they will be an improvement over hollow points. Federal lists the hollow point round I am using as a target round. Doesn't give me a great deal of confidence,

If you are reloading you should try Sierra bullets. I like the 63gr SMP bullets. You can't go wrong with them. May be better ones out there, but Sierras just work. Some of the plastic tips will splash on a hard bone, but work grat if you don't hit bone.

I normally reload but lately I've been using the Fiocchi Extrema's with 50g V-max. They were on sale for like $17 for 50. Thought I'd give them a try and they've been shooting and killing great. I hear the primer hole is punched off center so the brass isn't good for reloading but I haven't checked the ones I've shot. Here are the ones I'm using, out of stock but you can find them other places and maybe cheaper:

These are what I'm shooting in my RRA, 16" PP.
I'm getting 1/2" groups or less, but haven't killed a coyote with it yet.

My gun is a 1 in 9. I will see about some 55 grn bullets today. Coughin too much to hunt, but should be able to make it to the range to test out some new lead today.

For the 223 I personally would not shoot anything with "max" in its name. I think the hollow points would be a great choice for the 223.

I have shot 17 in two years with .223 Superformance. Its my choice from now on as I have lost some with other brands of ammo.n Good luck.

I went to gander mountain on the way to the range, and was not surprised to see that not only did the not have any vmax, but they did not have any .223 ammo of any sort. Looks like I'll be shooting hollow point this week when I am out.

Not like I'm likely to need it with the forecast in the 60s each day anyways.

When I find some bullets I'll give them a try.

I agree with airedale56. A base of the neck where it meets the chest drops them. The one I shot a few weeks ago was 130 yards with 53 gr superformance, drop twitch tail done.

FIOCCHI has a 50 grain VMAX, with shipping from Cabelas at about 43 cents a round. If you buy 800 rounds.

When I find some bullets I'll give them a try. same at my local gander ... other then buying in bulk .. they do have the same few boxes of .204 that have been there for a year ..lol...im gonna hit fin feather & fur mayb later this week ... bout 90% of the time they have a good selection !!

I shoot 60grain v-max and every dawg i shot dropped in his tracks except one that shot was 250yds and running and he went about 40yds. However every now and then it does mess up the fur usually if you hit em high or just behind the shoulder they have left massive holes. chest shots no exit and directly in shoulder most of the time no exit. most shots were inside 100yds. love the round but going to try 50grain next.
