coyote crap photo

yesterday i ran across a few coyote turds that were full of pieces of apple skin. from where the crap was to where apples would be laying on the ground is about 2 miles.

i broke this turd apart so the apple skin pieces might show up better.

another fairly fresh turd had a bunch of seeds in it, seeds i could not identify. i'm thinking of carrying a baggie along for 'seed turds', hoping that the county extension agent might be able to identify the seeds for me.

none of the fresh crap yesterday had any of the usual hair in them, although it appeared that rodent populations would be nearby. perhaps when apples are available coyotes prefer them to rodents. could it be that apples are easier to catch than a rodent?

Thanks for the pic, and the thought provoking post.

Only while hunting is it OK for your buddy to play in crap, I recently put a piece of elk crap against the tip of my nose to feel how warm it was!?!

So I take it now you'll be lying in wait for them somewhere between the poop and the orchards.

Thanks again the pics are really helpful.

Sagebrush,
From the looks of the photo Mr. Wiley might have discarded the juicy part of the apple and just ate the peel.Either that or he got interupted while slicing off the peel and eating it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Interesting though. That just goes to show you they will eat just about anything that isn't nailed down.

you are so right, ray. do you suppose they get a craving for the sugar, or maybe just the moisture in apples?

one piece of peel i looked at closely clearly showed the incisor teeth marks, where he bit through the peel.

Sagebrush,
Coyotes do in fact have a sweet tooth. I have had fruit farmers complain to me about coyotes eating their watermelons. I looked real close at those seeds in your photo. Apple seeds I think.

A few farmers have tried raising watermelons here where Im at but the coyotes will pretty much decimate most of the field, they dont plant em anymore.

Sagebrush,
Now do you really think that I would stretch the truth in a matter as serious as the type of seeds found in COYOTE droppings? Well ok, you caught me hacking on you that time. It COULD have been apple seeds though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RICH: yes, i agree with you; there could have been apple seeds along with the peelings. i didn't look any farther than observing the skins.

but, you see, i was dealing from the bottom of the deck; the turd that contained the unidentifiable seeds didn't show the seeds at all in a photo, like the apple skins showed up. so i didn't post a photo of that turd!

thanks for the FUN. now, if i can find a place next year where they grow watermelons . . . . . . . .

I too often find a poop and pick it apart.

BE CAREFUL!

When you're picking your nose later. This may sound like a joke but isn't. Trust me. You really don't want coyote crap up there.

You guys are hooked. I often stop and look at a pile of coyote droppings and kick it around. Even one time I tried to decifer what type of hair was in it. Then I thought, hmmmm, this is getting too intimate.

Ya'll might wanna look into CPEA (Coyote Poop Enthusiasts Annonymous.) Its a real good group for guys as yourself who tear into yote scat. It worked for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I know heart-of-gold cantaloupe farmers that can't keep the coyotes out of the fields when they start to ripen. I've also seen very well used trails into corn fields with corn in the stool. I think they're just opportunists. Good luck. Tim

Heres a photo of some watermellon based coyote crap from today. and yes Im HIGHLY certain /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif it was from a coyote...

I found the "leavings" with hot green chile seeds in them. AAAARRRRRRRRIIIIBBBBBAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! More than once, and Juniper berries and Pinion, and hair and...........I honestly believe the coyote is the "goat" of the canine world, it will eat anything that is normally edible. Maybe not paper and stuff but if it were ever food at one time, no matter how decayed it is a yote can swallow it.

I once found a pile of scat that was mostly styrofoam meat tray with about 2 feet of cellophane still attatched. One of the scientific journals, in an article on coyote diet described a deposit that contained a man's belt with buckle still attatched.

I have found that at certian times of the year, late fall, early winter, the yotes eat a lot of veggie matter. In the area I hunt right now their eating alot of pistaschio nuts. Thought about bringing a can of planters mixed nuts as a lure, but alas, baiting is not legal!

Has anybody ever noticed the amount of persimon seeds in the scat of coons, possums, coyotes, and foxes??? It is very common this time of year when the persimons are ripe... The big mystery is this: I have found animal scat with persimon seeds, but there were no persimons for miles... I wish I could find the persimon tree(s)... I'm serious... A pile of coon crap in the Sahara Desert will have persimon seeds, but there are no persimons to be found...

My beagle sometimes eats coyote crap, she could tell you what flavor they are.  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
