Coyote dog cost

Roode i 100% understand situations as you are talkin about. There's alot of people who thinks they were done wrong and very well may have been. At the same time some of them just made some poor decisions and wasted some money and hold a grudge on account of their own ignorance.

That is very true that is why I did not attempt to train myself as I was as green as the dog. All that I can say is it was a very big expensive let down and a learning experience. But now with the help of some real good guys I think I'm on the right road now.

What does it cost to put a coyote in front of a dog?
lets say $25 with gas, travel, vehicle maintenance, scouting, blank stands and so on, not counting the hours involved or e-collars and food/vet and the dogs maintenance. so if a started dog has 75-100 coyotes in front of it you looking at $2000 ball park for a started dog and what 3 times or more that for a finished dog?

I guess the real question is what is a started dog what is a finished dog , and what is a fair price for one.

Phil, my staement earlier was more about the guy "who really wants a dog but then dont hunt but 3 or 4 times a month". i wasnt meaning nothing more than that. i think if a man hunts his dog year round he would see 75-100 coyotes. that is kinda where i was going with it.

i also agree with Randy. he knows more about these old dogs than alot of us will ever know. i also stand by my statement and agree that when trying to get a dog untrained and then train it yourself, that it is kind of a crap shoot.
you can spend alot of money just to find out it is a dud or you could go get an old "cur from the rancher" and it turn out to be a champ.

wen it comes to getting an untrained dog, myself, i will just stick to finding these free dogs and give them a whirl, if they dont work out, then bye bye. they were going to get knocked in the head anyway if i didnt come get it.

all in all, i just hate to see a guy get a dog that is going in the right direction and get him home and hunt it twice a month and then talk about getting screwed by the seller because the dog is worthless. that isnt fair to the dog at all.

Isn't very fair to the seller either.

That or a guy buying a pup from a guy that doesn't turn out and the buyer bashing the seller.

When it comes to coyotes and dogs i dang sure listen when Randy talks.

In the end its not who raises a dog or trains him's fault all the time. Sometimes a dog just don't have it. If you want a decoy dog your gonna have to find them watch tapes of him and hunt with him and be ready to spend some money.

or just the free one off of craiglist that is a freak.lol.

the dogs we use for cattle on the ranch are good dogs. currs, catahoulas, and crosses between them. a few are bred each year to replace ones that either get killed, crippled, or just dont cut it. out of all the pups, there are several that "dont fit the bill" of what the ranch needs and are done away with.

i am confident that out of the ones that didnt get to make it, i could find 1 or 2 each year that would decoy coyotes just fine. im just not much into raising pups. i dont really want to raise one 7 or 8 months before i can use him. its just not my cup of tea. but that may start happening in the near future.

i think i will take a few of these free pups evey year and put coyotes in front of them just to show it doesnt take alot of money. just alot of time!

Or the guy that buys said dog pays in full and then seller tries to give said dog away to a guy he knows.

DID happen just ask the right guy he will tell you. You know him pretty good.

I guess I need to just not have a opinion or facts to go with it.

I would of had 1700.00 in a dog that was no good if it was not for one very honest upstanding guy.

But now I'm done. I have said my piece and thanks to the guys that have helped me out.

my opinion is that if you are not willing or capable to put 75-100 coyotes in front of a dog a year, you do not need one.it is not fair to the dog! they can only take so many blank stands or days sitting in the yard before they start going down hill. it takes alot of time and effort.

ive seen good dogs that do well on coyotes go from anywhere from $1,000-$3,500. One of the best ones ive seen was free off of Craigslist!

This answered my question. Thanks for all your replies and good advice, I am sure there are novices who are glad you took the time to post.

it just wears me out to hear people say it takes a certain type or breed of dog. i believe that it isnt about the breed of the dog or the bloodline it comes out of, it is what is in the mind and heart of the dog.

heck, Cawlison wants to make my yorkiea decoy dog.hahahaha

I'm tellin ya that yorkie in the winter months would make for some crazy action.

Roode I'm not personally attacking you. We have no problems and i don't want any. Just gotta be careful in the dog world.

It is the same in anything, if I have something, say a car, and I drive the heck out of this car and you see me driving this car and I look good driving this car, it makes you want my car, if you want it bad enough you will pay whatever it takes to have my car, then you realize it is a rust bucket and think I took advantage of you, because I don't look as good as you driving what is now your car...that is why I asked what to expect in terms of cost on a dog.

It doesn't matter who I buy a dog from or how much I hunt with the dog or whatever, that is up to me to do with it as I want. I appreciate the advice and hope it helps people think before they jump out and lust after something, anything that some other person owns. Buyer beware comes to mind.

Hope I don't piss off anyone.

Neither do I cawilson just a real sore spot with me.

I have found some great dog guys through this so I guess I can say it wasn't all bad.

finally a good discussion in the dog forum!!! lol

jrnm, i lust over nice cars, good dogs and beautiful women. nothing wrong with that!! haha

I wanted to put it in terms men would understand on price/demand/cost relationship.

I'm thinking I want to find a dog that someone absolutely hates and can't stand, that way if the coyotes eat it or I accidently shoot it, folks will be happy it is gone.

You guys did good getting Randy to post on this thread.
Have just a couple of things to add.
I have been asked numerous times to take dogs and put coyotes in front of them. Turned down 50 dollars per coyote.
Talked almost all that were looking for a decoy dog out of it…….
Most guys will not/can not hunt enough to keep a dog straight.

So “‘IF” I was selling a started dog (20 to 30 killed coyotes) it would be 1200 to 1500. “IF” I thought it was going to be a great dog it would not be for sale.
Never had a finished dog, so have no idea what one would be worth….but it would be LOTS….

Doesn’t mean you should not have a dog and carry it with you on stand, that’s up to each individual and what they want from their hunt.

Stay after them
Kelly
