coyote home range

Here in northern WI during the summer and fall there were quite a few coyotes around my place. As the snow comes, and the deer move to yards, the coyotes seem to disappear too. What's the size of their home range in forested areas? Do they follow the deer herd in the winter? Still trying to get my first coyote. Thanks.

Jeffo,

In the Predator Biology forum, there is currently a topic titled Coyote Patterns/Ranges that might be helpful to you. I am not sure if it will answer your specific question, as I have not read through it, but I remember seeing it there. I hope this helps.

My years of chasing fox and coyotes show me that coyotes can easily have a home range of 10-15+ miles during warmer, greener months. During the winter they are all about the energy expended = benefit in calories equation. They tend to travel small dense areas, rich with mice and stay protected from the foul weather. My advice is to call tight dense areas - not fit for man, and the sunny sides of hills.

Jeffo;
You did not mention what type of calling sound you have tried. Hunt near your deer yarding areas and try a fawn in distress sound. Good luck. Yote Hunter.
